Rogue Pictures is set to develop a sequel to Bryan Bertino’s horror thriller “The Strangers,” according to Variety.
Produced on a budget of roughly $9 million, the film opened in May and generated $54 million domestically. Liz Tyler and Scott Speedman starred as a couple terrorized by three mysterious attackers.
Bertino is expected to write the follow-up, although it’s not clear whether he’ll return to direct. The plot of the sequel will likely involve Liv Tyler and some of the first film’s villains.
Currently, Bertino is working on “Black,” which at this stage is described as a thriller with supernatural elements. He is also writing “Alone,” a thriller that has already been in development at Rogue for quite a while.
Although I pretty much enjoyed “The Strangers,” I really hate the idea of Rogue trying to launch another horror franchise à la “Saw.”
What’s your reaction to this?

The trailer for The Strangers was first shown at the 2007 Comic Con. It was expected to hit theaters that fall, but was ultimately pushed all the way to May 2008. Based on the promotion of the film I didn't notice anything in particular that would warrant the film a prime release slot, but the $52 million it made off a $9 million budget proves something. Whether it proves audiences were itching for a horror film in the summer or they actually liked it can't exactly be determined. I know I thought it was just shy of awful. This was just another film featuring people making silly decisions under duress and outside of some creepy masks I don't think it offered the genre anything of interest. Of course, when you pull in numbers like that and have an open-ended ending as this film did a sequel is pretty much a guarantee and that guarantee

I read some very odd news this morning from Variety that I thought I's share with all you horror buffs out there. It seems that Rogue pictures wants to turn their mega-grossing hit The Strangers into, not just a sequel, but a full on franchise like Saw or Scream. Helmer Bryan Bertino is confirmed as spilling ink on one at least one more terrorizing installment, upon which I'm sure the potential for a franchise rests (no pressure eh?). But that's not all I've got for you this morning. Oh no my friends, Variety is also reporting that Liv Tyler is back in the starring role which, well without spoiling anything for you guys waiting for the DVD, just doesn't make a lot of sense. Is this a prequel perhaps? A revenge flick? A reporting mistake? Only time will tell I guess, but for now I remain skeptical yet intrigued. And besides,

"Rogue Pictures has set in motion a sequel to its summer hit "The Strangers" and has set Bryan Bertino to return to write the script," according to Variety. The article continues, "Bertino wrote the original and made his directing debut on the film; it’s yet to be determined whether he’ll helm the sequel. The expectation is that Liv Tyler, along with several of the original villains, will return. Production is being slated for early 2009." The first movie starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman went on to gross $54 million domestically making it the surprise horror hit of the summer. Writer/Director Bertino apparently has several other genre-related pictures on queue. The article says, "Bertino is also scripting to direct "Black," a character-driven thriller with supernatural elements, and is rewriting to direct the thriller "Alone." Both are for Rogue." More on The Strangers 2 when we hear it!

Talk about movies that didn’t cry out for a sequel; Variety reports this morning that Rogue Pictures has pulled the trigger on The Strangers 2, with original helmer Bryan Bertino back to pen the script. No word on if he’ll direct again or not.
Here’s the messed up part of the article, and I hope its just speculation on the author’s part; it says that Liv Tyler is expected to return to her role from the first. Anyone who’s seen The Strangers (review) knows that while not entirely unrealistic, it sure would be annoying if it were true.
Meanwhile Bertino continues work on Black and Alone, two other films he’s working on with Rogue. Keep it here for more details on The Strangers 2 as we learn ‘em!

We broke the news exclusively here on B-d Back in June that Rogue Pictures was planning a sequel to their summer smash-hit, The Strangers, which racked in over $50 million here in the States. Today the news became official as Rogue has tapped Bryan Bertino to return to write the script. Bertino wrote and directed the first film. Bertino wrote the original and made his directing debut on the film; its yet to be determined whether hell helm the sequel. The expectation is that Liv Tyler, along with several of the original villains, will return. Production is being slated for early 2009. "Strangers" became Rogues first breakout hit, and the genre division of Focus Features is approaching the sequel as a franchise that could have the legs of "Saw" or "Scream." Budgeted at $9 million, the film grossed $54 million domestically in a highly competitive summer release slot.

If you skipped it a few months ago, you really missed one of the better surprises of the summer in The Strangers. It's not a great film, but it's about 80% of a good horror flick, maybe 82%. That's significantly better than most blood curdling efforts these days.
Audiences responded, making The Strangers one of the year's most profitable releases ($52 million domestic vs. a $9 million budget). And now, somewhat predictably, we'll get a sequel.
Bloody Disgusting said it was probably going to happen in the weeks following the films instant success, and now it's been confirmed that Rogue Pictures wants writer-director Bryan Bertino to craft a new script, although whether or not he returns to direct is up in the air. "Several of the original villains" and Liv Tyler are expected to return. Hm...I'm not sure how that would work. Are we talking a prequel? Surely not. But would that mean it's a sequel?

Rogue Pictures are finally going forward with the development of a sequel to the hit suspense thriller movie of the summer, "The Strangers". In the latest report concerning the second movie, the studio have been reported to have signed once again filmmakers Bryan Bertino to tackle the scripting of "The Strangers 2".
Though the scribe which made his directorial debut with the original "Strangers" has been brought back to the sequel project, it is still unclear whether he is going to be coming back as the helmer or not. On the casting possibility, it is said that leading actress Liv Tyler and several of the original villains are expected to reprise their parts in the new project.
The sequel of the movie about a couple stuck in the middle of nowhere with three lethal masked strangers will be a co-production movie from Vertigo Entertainment and Mandate Pictures. Hence, it means that Doug Davison,

Model-turned-author Mia Tyler had no idea actress Liv Tyler was her half-sister when the pair first met at an Aerosmith concert.
Neither girl had been told of the other's existence, but they instinctively knew they were connected in some way after meeting backstage at one of their father Steven Tyler's shows.
Mia, who was eight at the time, recalls, "There was this girl who looked like me. I went home that night and I couldn't stop talking about her, and my mom was like, 'Wait a minute...' and I think she started putting two and two together and she was like, 'That's your sister.'"
The Tyler sisters have been inseparable ever since, and are now helping each other cope with single life - divorced Mia recently split from fiance Brian Harrah, while Liv is going through a divorce with rocker Royston Langdon.
Mia says, "She's going through a divorce and I've been divorced so it's a lot of adult conversations."

Though I found it dull and derivative, most people out there dug on The Strangers (review) and are probably curious what makes the DVD cut “unrated”. Personally, if it’s not a 20-minute Liv Tyler shower scene, I’m not interested. Considering the “unrated’ cut is only two minutes longer, I doubt we’ll be seeing that.
DVD Active got a look at the art & specs for The Strangers DVD, out October 21st. The disc will come with the following;

After splitting with his wife Liv Tyler earlier this year, British rocker Royston Langdon may have a new gig. The Spacehog frontman, 36, is currently auditioning in L.A. to be Velvet Revolver's lead singer, following Scott Weiland's drama-filled exit from the band in April, according to Entertainment Weekly. A source says that Langdon and the current members of Velvet Revolver hit it off. "They all got along great," says the source. "It was really a refreshing change for the band."Although the band's management wouldn't confirm whether an offer was made to Langdon, instead saying that they're still looking at other singers,
