Ne-Yo

29 September 2008 9:07 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

Ne-Yo is part of a new generation of R&B stars who came up through the songwriting ranks, scoring hit after hit for other artists before recording their own material. Songwriters-turned-singers like John Legend, Robin Thicke, and Ne-Yo are so slick, appealing, and photogenic that it's hard to imagine why they weren't pushed into the spotlight in the first place. Alas, Ne-Yo can be a little too slick, as the title of his third album, Year Of The Gentleman, attests. Too much of the disc falls lazily into the template that made Ne-Yo a star: yearning vocals, romantic lyrics, sleepy tempos, tasteful acoustic guitar plucking or piano tinkling, and an aversion to anything too rocking or quirky. Still, Ne-Yo manages a few inspired variations on this formula: His ethereal falsetto channels Michael Jackson as he sings of romantic...

Michael Jackson Thrill the World, Fantastic Fest 2008

22 September 2008 9:46 AM, PDT | From Spout.com | See recent Spout news

As Fantastic Fest gains in prominence as a must-attend spot on the festival calendar, the special events organized by Tim League and friends are becoming as notorious as the wide-ranging selection of international genre and exploitation films on the official lineup. From shooting lessons to field trips to far-flung barbeque joints, to multiple karaoke parties and totally unofficial after-after parties in the hotel suites of celebrity attendees, the only criticism of the festival that keeps coming up is that there's actually too much fun to be had, too much to do. But this is not necessarily a Fantastic Fest-specific problem; with the Alamo Drafthouse chain itself, League has created a year-round home for Too Much Fun for not just cinema nerds, but anyone who likes to wash their pop culture down with copious amounts of beer. This became e ...

After a decade at the final frontier, Star Trek: The Experience is going where no Las Vegas Strip attraction wants to go.  The exhibit and its replica of the Enterprise closed its doors for good on Monday, says an Associated Press report on CNN. More than 3 million people have come through since the Experience opened in 1998, and the last few are “beaming up” from across the United States and around the world one last time, according to exhibit spokesman Chad Boutte. Some seek a final encounter with the Borg, the television show’s race of organic robot aliens who tell everyone “resistance is futile.” Others just want to share a farewell glass of Tronya with fellow fans at the attraction’s restaurant. The attraction’s owner, Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., and the Las Vegas Hilton, its landlord, couldn’t agree on a new lease. They worked as a typical landlord and retail tenant,
