Sherlock gets Strong

5 September 2008 4:21 PM, PDT | From JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news

Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie is coming together quick -- we've got minted A-lister Robert Downey Jr. as the legendary sleuth, and possibly Russell Crowe as his nemesis Moriarty. So who else is gonna be in this thing? Ritchie let slip to Coming Soon that he's got up-and-comer Mark Strong in the cast as well. No word on who he's playing, but it's not Holmes' trusted comrade Watson -- that role hasn't been filled yet. You'll definitely be seeing Strong in the near future -- besides...

Gerard Butler Can Count To '300'...But Only Once

5 September 2008 1:40 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The Toronto Film Festival has begun, and that means big stars in huge press conferences. Among them is Gerard Butler, who was fielding questions about his new flick, the Guy Ritchie caper RocknRolla.

Of course, he wasn't just answering questions about that film. Superhero Hype! asked if Butler has been updated on the rumors of a 300 follow-up. The talk is that the movie will get another chapter, although Zack Snyder hasn't specifically said whether it will be a prequel or a sequel. Both options have their merits, to be sure.

Butler, however, doesn't seem to be making reservations for another night dining in hell.

"I've heard some backroom chatter, but nothing more, so I don't know if it would be a sequel or a prequel," Butler responded. "I don't want say anymore than that, because I really don't know. I haven't read anything. I can't see it myself--sequel for me absolutely not,

Jeremy Piven Wants to be the "Jewish Michael Phelps"

5 September 2008 1:30 PM, PDT | From Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news

After walking the red carpet in London, the RocknRolla crew flew over to Canada for their Toronto Film Festival premiere last night. The movie got a good review from PopSugar UK, and the cast looked like they were having a blast messing around with each other. After chatting with Jeremy at the Entourage premiere, we know he loves to joke around, talking about his Broadway debut and what is coming up for Ari in the new season. Here's more from what he told us on Wednesday night: On Entourage: "I think this particular dynamic is really interesting because its a bunch of guys with a NY sensibility, where they speak the truth to each other as they know it, and it can be tough love at times and really really brutal, but no matter what their status is they are going to give it to you straight and I

Two Casting Updates on Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes

5 September 2008 12:53 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Sometime last week, a rumor about Russell Crowe being cast as Watson in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes hit the internet, but right off the bat I knew it couldn't be true. I decided to stay away and it was quickly debunked, as expected. But now El Mayimbe of Latino Review brings us an interesting update today on Sherlock Holmes, including that Crowe may actually be involved - but not in the role originally rumored. While the rumor about Watson was debunked, El Mayimbe claims that Crowe is still in the running for the role of Professor Moriarty, Holmes' nemesis. Additionally, ComingSoon chimed in yesterday to announce that Mark Strong, who plays Archie in the upcoming RocknRolla, had been cast as well. Strong is supposedly joining Sherlock Holmes as Algernon Blackwood, an individual who was part of a magical order called The Golden Dawn. If you've never heard of Mark Strong,

Newton Refused To Shoot Sex Scene With Sick Butler

5 September 2008 10:34 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Movie beauty Thandie Newton forced director Guy Ritchie to fake a sex scene between her and Rocknrolla co-star Gerard Butler - because the Scottish star was suffering from a cold.

On the day the pair was scheduled to leap between the sheets, Butler arrived on set sick - and Newton was so scared of catching his cold, she refused to kiss him.

The actress says, "Gerry was very unwell indeed. So I wouldn't kiss him. Guy had to improvise. I don't know how he coped with those problems but it ended up being one of the most brilliant scenes."

Meanwhile, Ritchie's wife Madonna tried to cure the sick 300 star with vitamin shots.

He admits his celebrity nurse only served to make him feel worse: "I got a shot from his (Ritchie's) wife Madonna! I was sick,

and she was a nurse basically.

"Guy introduced me to her and she said, 'You're the sick one?' and I said, 'Yes'. Well, she was amazing. She just said, 'Drop your pants'. I stood there with my little bottom out, and she gave me a shot in the bum!

"It didn't work at all - I got more sick!. But I appreciated the effort."

More 'Sherlock Holmes' Rumors for Russell Crowe

5 September 2008 8:24 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Have we been swerved about Sherlock Holmes? Did Guy Ritchie give us an intentional smokescreen earlier in the week when he denied that Russell Crowe would be playing Watson to Robert Downey Jr.'s master detective? After all, Ritchie never said Russell wouldn't be in the movie.

In a move that makes a lot more sense, Latino Review cites a hush-hush source who says Crowe may play Holmes' nemesis, Prof. Moriarty instead. They are, for the record, the best-matched hero and villain of their kind, and in a way, Moriarty is the first supervillain, a man with tremendous power, resources, and resiliency. Unless he's near a waterfall. It's definitely a great character, no matter how you slice it.

Of course, this isn't an official press release, so it could be as bogus as the Watson reports, but based on Crowe's terrific work in 3:10 to Yuma as a villain, playing

Guy Ritchie: Madonna Is 'Very Supportive'

5 September 2008 5:50 AM, PDT | From PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news

She may not have been on his arm for the Toronto Film Festival premiere of RocknRolla (blame her touring schedule!) but Guy Ritchie says his wife Madonna was there for him throughout the making of the film. "She's been very supportive," Ritchie, 39, told People. "It was great." That said, he told reporters that he didn't know the secret of a happy marriage. "That's a toughie," he conceded. "If you know, you tell me." The stars of Ritchie's film also had tons of praise for the Material Girl, who often visited the set."She's gorgeous," Toby Kebbell said. "A lovely, stunning woman.

Crowe still in Holmes?

5 September 2008 3:26 AM, PDT | From JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news

It appeared that the Russell Crowe in Sherlock Holmes rumors were debunked pretty quickly. I had even heard word that Crowe was offered a role in the film (alongside Robert Downey, Jr.) put politely passed. Now Latino Review is saying that Crowe could still be in the mix. Apparently the initial reports of Crowe starring as Watson were incorrect and that Guy Ritchie was talking to Crowe about starring as Professor Moriarty. Latino's source says there is a "Very good chance" that...

Latino's Say Russell Crowe is Sherlock's Nemesis

5 September 2008 2:27 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Well, the rumor Russell Crowe was going to play Watson in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes turned out to be false as Guy Ritchie said, "Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that's news to me. I suspect that hasn't happened and I'm still looking for my Watson." Well, notice he didn't say Crowe hadn't been cast at all and the boys at LatinoReview are now hearing there may be another role for the Aussie actor. The new rumor has Crowe playing Professor Moriarty, a fictional character who is the best-known antagonist (and nemesis) of the detective Sherlock Holmes. Widely considered to be the first true example of a super villain, Moriarty is a criminal mastermind, described by Holmes as the "Napoleon of Crime" (T. S. Eliot would later use the same phrase, in homage, to describe Macavity in Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats). Arthur Conan Doyle,

Ritchie Still Puzzled About Kabbalah

4 September 2008 6:28 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Moviemaker Guy Ritchie has hinted at the fact he doesn't follow his wife Madonna's Kabbalah beliefs in a new interview promoting a documentary he's made about the faith.

Ritchie is hoping his new film will help others understand exactly what makes the ancient mysticism of Kabbalah so appealing to people like Madonna and Demi Moore - even though he admits he's not altogether clear about the movement himself.

In an interview with U.S. news show Extra, Ritchie said, "It's a complicated subject... I don't really understand Kabbalah as a religion or a belief system."

But he thinks his film will be of great interest to those who are curious about Kabbalah: "It gets people rather hot under the collar."

Tiff Review: Rock N Rolla

4 September 2008 4:05 PM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

Well, glory be, Guy Ritchie is back and back in a big way.  His debut film, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, branded Ritchie the brash young wunderkind of Brit film; Snatch, for its part, confirmed his place as the patron of the punters and thugs.  His films were bold, stylish, hyper-violent sned ups of UK crime culture, painting a vivid picture of a world where everyone was on the take, where everybody had an angle.  Ritchie was indisputably the best in the world at what he did, the absolute king of his particular niche, and it seemed like there was nowhere to go but up.

And then he married Madonna and made Swept Away as a star vehicle for his new bride.  And the less said about that film, the better.  Recognizing he’d made a horrible mistake there Ritchie moved back towards his roots with Revolver but he

Toronto Review: Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla

4 September 2008 7:05 AM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Guy Ritchie has done it again. RocknRolla is yet another Ritchie classic like we've seen twice before with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998 and Snatch in 2000. It may not exactly top either of those two in content, but it's certainly the best British gangster film in the last eight years, which says a lot. Plus it doesn't hurt to add another great film to the Ritchie library, especially one with such a genuinely entertaining line-up of actors. In short, RocknRolla boasts that same brilliant visual style that Ritchie is known for, as well as a deceitful story as sharp as the one from Snatch. Whether you end up liking the story or not, there's no denying that Ritchie is a talented filmmaker capable of pure entertainment. Focusing on two smalltime crooks named One Two (Gerard Butler) and Mumbles (Idris Elba), RocknRolla delves into the British underworld like ...

Ritchie Denies Crowe Set For Sherlock Role

3 September 2008 5:00 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Latest: Director Guy Ritchie has denied Australian actor Russell Crowe is to play Sherlock Holmes' sidekick Dr Watson in a new movie about the fictional detective.

The Gladiator actor was rumoured to be starring opposite Robert Downey Jr. as the legendary sleuth's confidante and storyteller in Ritchie's forthcoming picture.

But the moviemaker has denied that Crowe is being considered for the role - insisting he is still open to suggestions about an actor for the part.

He says, "I don't have a Watson. Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that's news to me. I suspect that hasn't happened and I'm still looking for my Watson."

Russell Crowe Is No Guy Ritchie's Dr. Watson

2 September 2008 11:34 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Despite circulating rumor, Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe is unlikely to take the part of Sherlock Holmes' sidekick, Dr. John Watson. Director Guy Richie insisted on the fact for his next film project, "Sherlock Holmes", at the premiere of his latest gangster movie "RocknRolla". "I don't have a Watson," he responded to the casting speculation. "Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that's news to me. I suspect that hasn't happened and I'm still looking for my Watson."

Regarding the plot, the husband of Madonna hinted that a new story has been developed especially for the film. "It's going to be an amalgamation of all those narratives," he revealed. On the same notion, producer Susan Downey shared, "The world is within all the stories and it actually goes back to the books but the story is actually one that we made for the movie.

Ritchie: 'Madonna tells me what to wear'

Guy Ritchie has revealed that he is happy for Madonna to take control of his wardrobe. The film director admitted that he is too lazy to worry about his appearance and is pleased when the Queen of Pop does the hard work for him. In an interview with Elle magazine, he explained: "Doesn't every wife? I've been accused of not being vain enough. It's laziness. Wives appreciate it when you make an effort. But there's a point at which you look like you're trying too hard. Overt vanity is unappealing." Asked whether he disapproved of Madonna's (more)

Actors Want Odd Parts

2 September 2008 3:19 PM, PDT | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

Competing Sherlock Holmes movies will be racing to see who can get before the cameras faster.  Guy Ritchie (Rocknrolla)’s version already has Robert Downey, Jr. on board as Holmes but now Russell Crowe says he wants to play Watson. He was quoted in Australia’s Daily Herald as indicating this desire although an anonymous source was cited.

Crowe is looking for a project now that his Robin Hood film with Ridley Scott is on hold for at least a year.

Meantime, also in Australia, Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia was quoted by Showbiz Spy indicating his desire to play a decided adult Boy Wonder. "I always thought I would make a great Robin. I would love to be Christian Bale's sidekick in Batman," he told the reporter. "Even when I was younger I never wanted to be Batman." Of course, director Christopher Nolan has already said for years now

Updated: Russell Crowe to Star Opposite Downey as Dr. Watson?

2 September 2008 3:10 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Update: Lies, all lies... The Guardian gives us this: "I don't have a Watson," [director Guy] Ritchie told reporters. "Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that's news to me. I suspect that hasn't happened and I'm still looking for my Watson." My experience with Sherlock Holmes, the character, zilch. I haven't read any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories and (to my knowledge) haven't seen any of the films centered on the man. However, now that Guy Ritchie is prepping to bring the famed detective to the big screen I am ready for my introduction. Robert Downey Jr. is already aboard to star as the title character in Sherlock Holmes and now Russell Crowe is rumored to be aboard to star as Dr. Watson. The rumor comes from The Sun, saying the opening in Crowe's schedule caused by the delay of Ridley Scott's Nottingham

Guy Ritchie Confirms Russell Crowe Not Playing Watson in 'Sherlock Holmes'

2 September 2008 2:04 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

It was a slow news weekend in the business of show, as holiday weekends tend to be. Helen Mirren admitting she used to love cocaine was at least second page news.

But we, along with a bunch of other outlets, weighed in on the rumor that Russell Crowe would be playing Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes, the retooled detective movie directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr. Because the source of this story was Britain's The Sun, we told you that it might be suspect.

And its shelf life was brief.

Ritchie talked to Empire about the movie at the British premiere of RocknRolla (which is due out in the UK this Friday). "I don’t have a Watson,” confessed Ritchie. “Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that’s news to me. I suspect that hasn’t happened and I’m still looking for my Watson.

Russell Crowe Won't Be Dr. Watson

2 September 2008 9:02 AM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Well, darn! I no more than got to ponder this item from Australia's Herald Sun than it was debunked from England. The Sun was reporting that Russell Crowe was all set to play Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, instantly making Watson ten times more interesting than he's ever been allowed to be onscreen.

But just as all movie writers began pondering how incredibly brilliant it would be to see Crowe and Robert Downey Jr. pair up onscreen, perhaps as the Riggs and Murtaugh of Victorian London, it was dismissed entirely by none other than Guy Ritchie.

Ritchie was out doing red carpet duty for RocknRolla in London, when Empire asked him all about it. I'm kind of imagining a funny exercise in time difference here, where premiere reporters were being texted "Russ. C 2 be in Shlock Hlms?" from their Oz cousins just as Ritchie got out of his limo.
