Tadanobu Asano’s co-stars named in ‘Donju’

26 August 2008 5:02 PM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

Back in July it was announced that Tadanobu Asano would be the lead in the adaptation of the stage-play Donju written by Kankuro Kudo [Go, Ping Pong, Zebraman, Mayonaka no Yaji-san Kita-san and Maiko Haaaan!!! We can go on, you know]. The story is the mystery behind a young writer named Dekogawa (Asano), who has been “killed” multiple times, but somehow keeps reappearing.

We can now add more names to the bill. Asano’s supporting cast includes Yoko Maki [Udon and The Grudge], Kazuki Kitamura [Maiko Haaaan!!! and Azumi], Yusuke Santamaria [Udon and the Bayside Shakedown movies], Yoko Minamino, and Aimi Satsukawa.

Filming began at the beginning of this month and we can expect a release in 2009.

Asano!  Matsuda!  Yakusho!  Miyazaki!  An All Star Cast Ascends Tsurugidake

14 August 2008 7:37 PM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

How’s this for a stellar cast:  Tadanobu Asano, Ryuhei Matsuda, Aoi Miyazaki and Koji Yakusho have joined together to star in vetern cinematographer Daisaku Kimura’s debut directorial effort.  Based on a novel by Jiro Nitta the film tells the story of a team of climbers exploring the Japanese mountains, particularly the fearsome peak of the title.  The actual Mt. Tsurugidake is considered one of the more treacherous mountains in the region, as evidenced by the fact sound man Teiichi Saito was badly injured in a rock slide during location shooting and had to be taken to hospital by helicopter.  Was it worth it?  Well, the first teaser has just been added to the Twitch Player and the cinematography is very impressive.  Check it out below the break.

Full Trailer For Japanese Anthology Film R246 Story With Tadanobu Asano!

6 August 2008 9:46 AM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

Who wants a movie with Tadanobu Asano having a guitar battle with space aliens to reclaim the drum kit that is the source of his power?  I do!  I do!  Throw in the fact that the piece was directed by Asano himself - just the second directorial effort from the international star - and written by Shinji Aoyama and I’m sold well before I even get to the other people involved in R246 Story.  That the other contributors include the likes of Shido Nakamura is purely a bonus in my books.  We’ve been tracking this one for a while and now we’ve got a full theatrical trailer to go along with the two earlier teasers. Tasty.  Check them below the break.

Kudo!  Asano!  Donju!

21 July 2008 9:46 AM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

While details on this are still sketchy at this stage I am generally of the opinion that any news involving Japanese writer-director-comedian Kankuro Kudo is good news.  I am also of the opinion that any news involving actor Tadanobu Asano is good news.  So news that Kudo and Asano will soon be collaborating?  Spectacular!

The project is titled Donju, the film adaptation of a crime comedy written by Kudo as a stage play - one that won Japan’s Kunio Kishida Drama Award.  Kudo will not be directing this himself but he did handle the adaptation from stage play to screen play himself before passing it off to first time feature director Hideaki Hosono, who has previously directed music videos for Kudo’s band.  The story?  It’s a mystery revolving around a young writer who keeps getting killed but keeps returning to life.
