Stars turned out for Monday's New York City premiere of The Dark Knight – and to honor their friend and fellow actor, Heath Ledger. Ledger’s onetime girlfriend Naomi Watts, with her current flame Liev Schreiber, attended the gala screening, along with celebrities including Ethan Hawke, Blake Lively and Penn Badgley, Regis and Joy Philbin, Lauren Conrad, Patrick Wilson and Emile Hirsch. Knight costars Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal (who came with boyfriend Peter Sarsgaard), Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman paid tribute to Ledger as they walked the black carpet. "Heath will always be in our hearts,” said Eckhart.

Actor Emile Hirsch was left stunned and sickened when he was presented with "pig knuckle" in a German restaurant while he was filming Speed Racer in Berlin.

The Into The Wild star was looking forward to dining on a local delicacy - until it actually arrived.

He says, "It was like the hoof (trotter) of a pig and it's really big and they steamed it and I got it and I was really excited, and then it sat in front of me.

"I have never sent something back without taking a bite... and I had to send it back.

"I was like, 'I'll pay for it right now, just please get it out of here.' It was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen."

The Wachowski brothers have officially left this mortal coil. Any suggestion that a live-action take on a frivolous '60s anime series would represent a downshift in ambition after The Matrix trilogy is dispelled within the first few seconds of Speed Racer, which seems to take the concept of 600 km/hr. racing cars as aesthetic inspiration. Painting with Cgi, the Wachowskis have constructed a candy-colored future so wholly artificial that the humans appear out of place, grafted crudely onto a world that's evolved past them. Granted, Hollywood blockbusters like 300 and Beowulf have recently expanded the potential of digital effects, but with nothing like the aggression of Speed Racer, which is borderline-experimental in the way it challenges the limits of perception. It's forward-thinking, visionary, and much of the time unwatchable. With a name that really suits only one possible occupation, young Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) dreams of following in...

The cast of upcoming summer blockbuster Speed Racer added to the star count at the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in Long Beach, California on Saturday by turning up to cheer on celebrity car racers Drew Lachey and Wilmer Valderrama.

Susan Sarandon, Emile Hirsch, Matthew Fox, John Goodman and Christina Ricci all took in the sights and sounds of the Long Beach Grand Prix's celebrity day.

Into The Wild star Hirsch will bring the cartoon character Speed Racer to life next month when the movie adaptation hits cinemas.

Actor Emile Hirsch once intimidated several unsuspecting onlookers - after venturing off a film set with a temporary tattoo on his face.

The 22-year-old was required to shave his head and wear a tattoo of a zipper on his skull while filming the 2005 skateboarding drama Lords Of Dogtown - and he was stunned to see how people reacted to his bizarre appearance while out and about in Los Angeles.

He recalls, "There were days when I would leave the tattoo on and walk into bars. I thought it's be fun to walk into these places with a tattoo on my face and a shaved head, and see people's reactions.

"Everyone responds, and you get even more of a reaction than if you were, say, walking around with a celebrity!"

Sean Penn, known more for his acting abilities than his directorial talent, was nevertheless among the nominees for best filmmaker announced by the Directors Guild of America Tuesday. Penn was nominated for his Into the Wild, starring Emile Hirsch. Among the other DGA nominees were the Coen brothers for No Country for Old Men, Paul Thomas Anderson for There Will Be Blood, Tony Gilroy for Michael Clayton, and Julian Schnabel for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. With rare exceptions, the DGA winner goes on to win the best-director Oscar at the Academy Awards presentations.
