Some lucky folks out there recently got the chance to go behind the scenes of Henry Selick's upcoming 3D stop motion adventure "Coraline," which is based on the novel by Neil Gaiman. As you can see in the pic above, the stuff they got to see sure looks amazing.
The story centers on a young girl named Coraline, who discovers a secret door in her home that leads to a whole different world. Dakota Fanning, Keith David, Teri Hatcher and Ian McShane lend their voices to the film's characters.

The players: Director: Paul W.S. Anderson, Writer: Paul W.S. Anderson, Cast: Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson, Natalie Martinez
Facts of interest: Based on 1975's "Death Race 2000."
The plot: A man (Statham) is framed for his wife's murder and forced to participate in a brutal car race in which drivers must kill each other on the road to victory.
Our quick thoughts: For the most part, Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Death Race” offers you exactly what the trailer and TV spots promised: brutal, fast-paced car racing. That’s what you should expect if you plan to see the flick, because that’s all you get for the price of admission. Surprisingly, “Race” is not that bad of a big-screen experience. It’s utterly brainless, sure, but it’s also efficient enough to offer some of you a darn good time.

Fans of Jason Statham will likely enjoy Paul W.S. Anderson's new action flick "Death Race," in which the actor plays a prisoner who's forced to participate in a deadly race for freedom. Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson and Natalie Martinez co-star. While the nation's top critics didn't really give the flick a warm welciome, let's see what the online film fans have to say about it. (I will post my review later on today)
• Brian Orndorf at Collider: "Visually, 'Death Race' is as hackneyed a film as can be. Performance-wise, it's in Rem sleep."
• Cinematical's James Rocchi: "Anderson seems to take every chance he can to aim the camera through other elements -- smoke, glass, water, flame, iron bars, dust, and so on -- to capture the focus of the shot, and while that device is hardly a hallmark of greatness, it's lively."

Death Race Directed by: Paul W.S. Anderson Cast: Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Tyrese Gibson and Ian McShane Time: 1 hr 40 mins Rating: R Plot: In the near future, prisons are run by corporations and Death Race is bigger than the Super Bowl. Jensen (Statham) is framed to become the next great driver. Who’s It For? It's a fairly boring action movie that fails to just give us an awesome "Death Race." There is some pretty violent moments so it definitely earns its R rating. If you'll sit through anything for some blood, then you won't mind the absurd leaps and bounds Death Race attempts to take with a straight face. Expectations: I was nervous. Event Horizon, Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil are all directed by Anderson and Allen's presence had me scratching my head. SCORECARD

Starring Jason Statham, Joan Allen, and Ian McShane
Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson
Rated R
There are plenty of reasons to knock Death Race sight unseen. The director, Paul W.S. Anderson, is best known for the first Resident Evil adaptation and a string of forgettable movies before and since, most of which are also based on video games. The star of this flick is Jason Statham, who is best known for driving fast, wearing a scowl, and kicking ass; we won’t be adding “Sir” to his name anytime soon. And, at least in spirit, it’s a remake of a pretty so-so movie called Death Race 2000.
However, when a movie, its stars, and its director give you exactly what you think they should and the results aren’t the least bit boring, well, see…that’s actually a success where I come from.

Several wide releases try their hand at the box office. Universal's "Death Race" incarnation starring Jason Statham unspools into around 2,400 locations. Paul W.S Anderson helms and adapts the new version based on the 1975 screenplay penned by Robert Thom, Ib Melchior and Charles B. Griffith. Also starring are Joan Allen, Ian McShane and Tyrese Gibson. Columbia Pictures' "The House Bunny" starring spoof comedy princess Anna Faris sees somewhere around 2,600 venues. Helmer Fred Wolf's track record is weak with a single directing credit for uber flop "Strange Wilderness" starring Steve Zahn. Writing is by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith of "Legally Blonde," "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Ella Enchanted" fame...

Here’s a new behind-the-scenes featurette on Henry Selick’s upcoming 3D stop motion animated film, Coraline. Adapted from the Hugo Award-winning, internationally best-selling novel, Coraline is a spine-tingling tale about a curious girl who unlocks a mysterious door in her family’s new home and enters into an adventure in a parallel reality. On the surface, this “Other World” eerily mimics her own life - though it is much more fantastical. In it, Coraline encounters different versions of her own life, including off-kilter neighbors and an Other Mother who attempts to keep her forever. Ultimately, Coraline must rely on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to get back home. Coraline, starring the voices of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders and Ian McShane, opens on February 6, 2009!

Steve Mason is now on Facebook. There are four new wide releases this week, but only of them is likely to top $10 million for the traditional 3-day weekend. The Jason Statham vehicle Death Race (Universal) seems to be getting some traction in industry tracking, although a huge breakout opening is unlikely. Instead, the Paul W.S. Anderson-directed action pic will likely open with $13 million-$16 million. I suspect this movie, also starring Oscar nominee Joan Allen (The Contender) and Golden Gobe winner Ian McShane (Deadwood), will be enough to out-pace holdover Tropic Thunder (DreamWorks/Paramount), which will probably dip 40 percent-45 percent from its opening weekend.

In anticipation of the August 26th release of Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Collector’s Edition DVD, director Henry Selick participated in an online discussion with Shocktillyoudrop.com to talk about the film fifteen years later. “Naturally, the talks turned to sequel possibilities of which Selick says, “There has been discussions over the years about a possible sequel. When those discussions came up about 7 years ago it was unsettling that it was suggested this time it would have to be done in CG. I’m glad that did not happen. But as far as coming up ideas for a sequel, you have to admit there are a lot of other great holidays for Jack Skellington to take over.” He adds that he has grown used to the idea of the film becomes a merchandising smash hit and is pleased the characters of Jack and Sally have captured an audience.

While most of the world had its eyes on Beijing and the Olympics this past week, DC's intrepid reporters Butane, Syxx, Foy, Uc, and yours truly have been scouring the globe for genre news and views to send your way. Although I'm not following the Games much myself, I thought for this August 9-15, 2008, Weekly Wrap-Up, I'd join the fray and employ an international theme focusing on projects outside the good ol' Us of A.
Considering this is also the week that brought news of a possible Bigfoot being found, it makes sense to start with a nature-run-amok item. Coming soon from Korea is Chaw, about a man-eating, mutant boar with a bad attitude. The producers are promising some realistic, frightening effects despite the creature being mostly CG, and we'll see how they do. Rogue managed to use CG successfully; hopefully Chaw will too.
