He was the very first act to be signed on by Virgin Records when the company was launched by Richard Branson. Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", Virgin's first release, went on to become a multi-million seller abetted, in no small part, by the fact that it became inexorably linked to the box office hit movie The Exorcist (1973)

Has written at least three songs for or about his children. "Sally" from the album "Platinum" (1979), "Molly" from the album "QE2" (1980) and "Innocent" (about his daughter Greta) from the album "Earth Moving" (1989).
