The Foot Fist Way DVD Review

17 September 2008 2:25 PM, PDT | From MovieBlog.Ugo.com | See recent Ugo MovieBlog news

Review by Matt Patches First, a note to the studios: Putting “The best thing of its kind since Napoleon Dynamite” across the top of a DVD is the equivalent of meeting a person with “Norbit Fan” tattooed across his forehead.  You’re asking me not to be their friend, and hey, that’s just not cool. The case for The Foot Fist Way, an indie comedy from rising star Danny McBride and director Jody Hill, is branded with such a label, and unjustly so.  Yes, both films may be micro-budget comedies about small-town America, but what works in Foot Fist’s favor is that the movie is funny.  Who would have thought?  Danny McBride, who may be the product Will Ferrell and

Pineapple Express hits number one in the UK

16 September 2008 3:20 PM, PDT | From The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news

It was all aboard the express for UK cinema-goers this weekend as Pineapple Express raced straight to the #1 spot, taking over £1.3 million at the UK box office.

After taking on the sex comedy in The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up and redefining the coming-of-age film in Superbad, the filmmaking team at Apatow Productions makes its first action-comedy in Pineapple Express, a Midnight Run for the stoner set about two lazy guys on the lam and their comic attempt to stay one step ahead of a band of vicious killers. Process server Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) has a grudging business relationship with the laconic Saul Silver (James Franco), deigning to visit only to purchase Saul.s primo product . a rare new strain of pot called Pineapple Express. But when Dale becomes the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop (Rosie Perez) and the city.s most dangerous drug lord

Universal to bring back ‘Sea Monsters’

11 September 2008 12:35 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Universal Pictures is ready to develop a live-action flick based on Sid and Marty Krofft’s 1970s children’s television show “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters,” according to Variety.

Dana Gould, a writer-producer on “The Simpsons,” will pen the script for the big-screen adaptation.

The original series focused on a sea monster named Sigmund, who’s kicked out of his home by his brothers because he’s apparently too nice. NBC started airing the show in 1973.

“Sigmund,” however, is not the first Krofft project to make the transition to the big screen. Universal is also currently working on Brad Silberling’s “Land of the Lost,” which is based on another popular ‘70s TV show.

“Lost” follows a group of people sent to a world inhabited by dinosaurs and other strange creatures. Starring Will Ferrell and Danny R. McBride, the film is scheduled to open in June 2009.

Sleestak vs Ferrell

26 August 2008 1:07 PM, PDT | From JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news

The cool peeps at Collider have got ahold of what appears to be a magazine scan of Will Ferrell as park ranger Rick Marshall alongside a buff looking Sleestak, a native of the world of Land Of The Lost, which Ferrell and his family stumble into after they fall through a portal or something. The Brad Silberling directed remake also stars "about to be totally huge" actor Danny McBride, undead "Pushing Daisies" cutie Anna Friel and a whole bunch of other Sleestak doing...

Review: "Tropic Thunder"

15 August 2008 8:32 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Seen on: August 15, 2008

The players: Director: Ben Stiller, Writers: Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux, Etan Cohen, Cast: Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel, Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, Danny R. McBride, Brandon T. Jackson

Facts of interest: Stiller also directed "Zoolander," "The Cable Guy" and "Reality Bites."

The plot: A bunch of Hollywood actors are on the run from ruthless killers after their director drops them off in the middle of the jungle.

Our quick thoughts: A solid mixture of satire and spoof, Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder” should wildly entertain those who don’t feel offended by the film’s high dose of rude jokes. DreamWorks’ risqué comedy packs quite a few laughs and boasts plenty of fast-paced action, complete with a brilliant cast of big-time Hollywood players who don’t care to mock their own work.

Opening This Week: Jazz living, Asian-influenced horror and Woody Allen

10 August 2008 11:56 PM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Neil Pedley

With the summer's end in sight, this week might represent the last hurrah in the name of good fun before the gloomy, Oscar-baiting seriousness of the fall release schedule descends upon us. Woody's back, there's a grindhouse/B-movie double header, and in the realm of blockbuster comedy, it's the wily veteran versus the young upstart as Ben Stiller battles Seth Rogen in an all-out race to the stupid.

"Anita O'Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer"

Although she was overshadowed by such greats as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, Anita O'Day became one of the "three queens of Jazz," in spite of an artform dominated by African-Americans and her struggle with her own personal demons. In this documentary, the famed white jazz vocalist reflects on nearly 70 years in the spotlight, not merely performing jazz, but living it as a lifestyle. O'Day's former manager Robbie Cavolina and

Tropic Thunder Viral Launches Hilarious Character Vids

8 August 2008 5:48 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

As we near the opening of Tropic Thunder next Wednesday, August 13th, the faux documentary on the project titled Rain of Madness continues to turn out some awesome snapshots of the main characters. Earlier, we tipped you off to featurettes for leads Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller) and Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr). Now, rainofmadness.com/ has been updated with a variety of other clips that are just plain hysterical, including those for two of the film's best characters (second to Downey Jr., of course): pyrotechnician Cody Underwood (Danny McBride) and rising rapper Alpa Chino (Brandon Jackson). If you're interested in Tropic Thunder in the slightest, you definitely need to check out these videos. First off, Alpa Chino is probably the best damn name I've come across in a long while. Upping the funny even further, Chino's trademark products are an energy drink called Booty Sweat and a candy bar called Bust-a-Nut,

FilmCouch #82: Pineapple Express and Foot Fist Way

8 August 2008 6:00 AM, PDT | From Spout.com | See recent Spout news

Rogen and Franco are hilarious in Pineapple Express, but the pothead to really watch out for is Danny McBride. Often relegated to brilliant and all-too-brief supporting roles, McBride stars in The Foot Fist Way, which is finally getting a gradual release thanks to Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. McBride's magic lies in his ability to be a complete asshole 100% of the time on screen, while still charming the viewer. How does he do that? ALSO, a call to Karina brings us back to the mid-twentieth century with some great television. What is it that makes AMC's Mad Men so addictive? ...

Feature: Judd Apatow's David Gordon Green

7 August 2008 6:17 PM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Matt Singer

Though critics may be divided over "Pineapple Express" . at the time of this writing, it weighs in at 57% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer . there is a consensus about at least one aspect of the Judd Apatow-produced stoner comedy: surprise over the choice of David Gordon Green as director. As Roger Ebert puts it in his positive review of the film, Green, "that poet of the cinema, is the last person you'd expect to find directing a male-buddy comedy about two potheads who start a drug war." Based on some of his own past comments, Green might be inclined to agree with him; when promoting his debut film "George Washington" a few years ago, Green told Charlie Rose, "I'm interested in any movie that's not like other movies. Growing up, I wasn't so much a 'Star Wars' or 'Raiders' kind of kid. I was a guy who'd watch 'Walkabout.

One of my favorite things about Tropic Thunder has been all the crazy offshoots from the film. There's the official site for the fictional stars of the film - Tugg Speedman, Kirk Lazarus, Jeff Portnoy, and Kevin Sandusky - as well as the site for Danny McBride's special effects master Cody Keith Underwood, the book the film within a film is based on and clinic that performed the skin pigmentation on Robert Downey, Jr.'s Kirk Lazarus. But perhaps my favorite of all the Tropic Thunder...

Romancing The Stoned

5 August 2008 11:58 PM, PDT | From NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news

Frequently hilarious, occasionally sweet and often graphically violent, "Pineapple Express" may not be the greatest stoner movie ever made, but it will do perfectly well until we get another hit of Harold and Kumar.

Seth Rogen and James Franco have terrific chemistry as, respectively, a semi-straight stoner and the addled drug dealer who finally achieves his goal of becoming the stoner's pal when the two are obliged to go on the run from a band of killers.

Movie Review - 'Pineapple Express'

5 August 2008 11:46 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Pineapple Express

Starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Gary Cole

Directed by David Gordon Green

Rated R

Pineapple Express certainly comes at you with all it has, but that might be the problem. It's an interesting mix of a stoner comedy and an action movie, and individually, those things are well represented here. It's when the stoner comedy has to have an ending like an action movie that Pineapple Express loses its way.

This is another movie that has received Judd Apatow's blessing, and to his legion of fans, this movie will probably rank somewhere below the late summer entry of 2007, Superbad. The reason being: Pineapple Express doesn't have a naturally funny premise. It's not about two guys who shouldn't score hot chicks trying to score hot chicks. This is about two potheads on the run from guys who want to kill them. As evidence of their intentions, the

The first time I saw Danny McBride was back when he worked opposite David Gordon Green in All The Real Girls. Since then, he has exploded and has worked on a few terrific films including the much too under appreciated The Foot Fist Way. In 2009, he is starring opposite Will Ferrell in The Land Of The Lost. In Pineapple Express, he gets to get down and vicious in one of the most fascinating fight sequences I.ve ever seen. I.m sure Pineapple will be winning .Best Fight. at the MTV Movie...

Movie Review: Pineapple Express

5 August 2008 4:00 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Life as a pothead is hard in the new millennium

Photo: Universal Pictures Pineapple Express is a little bit of good mixed with a whole lot of decent. Despite the film's rather enjoyable finale there are too many dull moments building up to it. Seth Rogen's star is slowly dwindling as he is increasingly proving to be a one trick pony, but what really let me down here was James Franco. After his Funny or Die series of "Acting with James Franco" videos maybe I was expecting a little too much, but those videos made me laugh far more than anything Franco did here. The film is billed as a raunchy stoner comedy, but in all actuality, while weed may be the driving force behind the plot there isn't a whole lot of weed smoking going on here. Franco plays Saul, a resident drug dealer specializing in marijuana and

Brandon T. Jackson from Tropic Thunder

31 July 2008 4:00 PM, PDT | From The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news

Brandon T. Jackson plays Alpa Chino in the blockbuster comedy Tropic Thunder. Jackson costars with comedians Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Danny R. McBride. But people will be talking most about Robert Downey Jr.'s Kirk Lazarus who is black faced throughout the film. I had a chance to talk to Jackson about the role, what it was like on the set and also as the film’s most prominent black actor, what he thought of Downey’s performance. And just so you know, the T. stands for Timothy. What did you bring to the role Alpa Chino that wasn’t in the script? I brought pretty much the whole energy in the beginning, where you see all the Bootie Sweat (Alpa’s energy drink). I took the rapper over the top and so ridiculous, but then developed him in the jungle where he’s in the situation with Robert

New Clip for 'Pineapple Express' Gives James Franco an Ass Kicking

30 July 2008 10:29 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

There are plenty of bad words in this clip from Pineapple Express, in which Seth Rogen and James Franco come to blows with Danny McBride. So, you know, turn the speakers down if you're at work.

Still, it has its moments, like when I believe James Franco yells "herpes" in the middle of a fight. We don't get the context of the beating, but we know it has to do with either marijuana, the killing that Rogen's character sees that sets him and his friend Franco on the run from a corrupt cop, or a combination of the two.

And as if it's taken right out of the movie, there's a rumor swirling around that Seth Rogen was booted out of his own party for not extinguishing a joint. Somewhere, probably in South Texas, Willie Nelson is smiling.

Pineapple Express comes out next Friday, and James Franco is on Letterman tonight,

Update on David Gordon Green's Future Projects - Remake of Six Pack and More!

26 July 2008 8:15 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

If you're not familiar with David Gordon Green, you will be soon. I was first introduced to the filmmaker when I saw the fantastic drama Snow Angels at Sundance last year, which was an amazing indie gem that got buried in its theatrical release in March. Over a year later and now he's bringing us one of the most highly anticipated comedies of the year - Pineapple Express. I had the chance to talk with Green in person today at Comic-Con and he updated me on the status of a lot of future project that he's working on. From a fantasy dragon movie with Danny McBride to an arctic warfare movie to a remake of Six Pack to a demolition derby comedy, Green is an ambitious filmmaker and has a lot on his plate after Pineapple Express. If any of those ideas I mentioned made you smile, you'll definitely want

Pineapple Express and a Brief History of the Movie Stoner

Comic-Con begins this week, not with a bang, but a blaze. Sony's eagerly awaited next installment in the train that is Judd Apatow continues barreling down the track with multiple word of mouth screenings of Pineapple Express this week, including one in San Diego during the massive weekend of the Con. It's worth trying to get into one just for the Huey Lewis and the News song that rolls over the end credits. I was lucky enough to see the flick last night, and it was excellent on all counts. It's over the top, violent, and very funny. And while Danny McBride's Red character threatens to outfunny both Seth Rogen and James Franco, it's Franco who bring ...
