American Idol host Ryan Seacrest and supermodel Heidi Klum have picked up their first Emmy nominations, after the 2008 Primetime TV Awards introduced the category of top host for a reality competition show.

The presenters will go up against Dancing With the Stars' Tom Bergeron, as well as Deal or No Deal's Howie Mandel and Survivor's Jeff Probst to take home the first honour.

Mad Men picked up 16 nods, the most nominations of any drama series, including Best Dramatic Series and Best Actor for its lead, Jon Hamm.

Hamm will face actors Hugh Laurie, for House; Michael C. Hall, for Dexter; Gabriel Byrne, for In Treatment; Bryan Cranston, for Breaking Bad; and James Spader, for Boston Legal.

Meanwhile, 30 Rock was the frontrunner in the comedy category, with 17 nominations, including best series - a gong the show took home last year - and leading actor, Alec Baldwin, and actress for Tina Fey, the show's creator.

The winners for the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be unveiled on 21 September at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

The TV Academy got a birthday cake for its 60th birthday Thursday morning – while American Idol's Ryan Seacrest, Project Runway's Heidi Klum and Dancing With the Stars' Tom Bergeron, as well as Deal or No Deal's Howie Mandel and Survivor's Jeff Probst, all got nominations in the first-time ever category of top host for a reality-competition show. And the nomination goes to "Pushing Daisies" on ABC, a series that really cleaned up in a lot of the comedy series categories of this year's prime time Emmy awards earning 12 nominations. While many of the show's nominations were in technical categories, there also were a few key nominations including Lee Pace for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Kristin Chenowith for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Pace, who plays Ned in the ABC series, has some stiff competition including Alec Baldwin from NBC's "30 Rock," Tony Shalhoub from USA's "Monk," Steve Carell from "The Office" on NBC, and Charlie Sheen from "Two and a Half Men" on CBS. Itv will not screen the second episode of Us drama Pushing Daisies because it doesn't have enough room on its schedule.

The show, which stars Lee Pace as a pie-maker who can bring people back to life, debuted to strong ratings on Saturday but Itv has confirmed it only has room to air eight of the nine episodes before the Euro 2008 football tournament starts.

A spokesman for Itv said: "Episode two was the only show we could drop without spoiling the storyline."

The week-long Paley Festival in Los Angeles has long been hallowed ground for television fans.  Over the years, the casts and creative minds behind the most popular and beloved series on TV have been welcomed at the Paley Fest to talk about their show, screen episodes, and interact with the fans.  2008's Paley Fest kicked into high gear on Saturday, when the cast of Pushing Daisies, along with creator/mastermind Bryan Fuller, showed up to entertain the masses.  Unfortunately, we at BuddyTV were not in attendance, but thanks to TV Guide, we learned what went down on Saturday night in the Cinerama Dome. 

On hand for the festivities were creator Bryan Fuller, producers Peter Ocko, Dan Jinks, Bruce Cohen and cast members Lee Pace, Anna Friel, Kristin Chenoweth, Chi McBride, and Ellen Greene.

One of the main things I was really happy to hear about were Bryan Fuller's comments regarding the strike.
