Raising his profile at the network considerably, NBC has named Matt Lauer, cohost of Today, to team up with Bob Costas to co-anchor the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics on Aug. 8. The opening ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin were co-anchored by Costas and Brian Williams. (Costas has co-anchored every Olympics opening ceremonies since 1992.) The announcement came even as NBC Sports & Olympics Chairman Dick Ebersol was saying that the network is preparing for the possibility of major breaking news in Beijing during the Olympics. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Ebersol said, "I always personally hope that it's basically an Olympics about sports. But if it isn't going to be sports, we'll be ready for news."

The Today Show, the morning program that feels like a slow release of helium directly inside your skull, exists in a kind of fog. Whether it's because the show airs so early in the morning, or because your mind hasn't fully switched from sleep to awake mode when watching it, The Today Show always seems unreal. It's not really happening. They didn't really just interview the guys from that old YouTube lion video live via satellite for no reason. Ann Curry is not an actual person--actual people blink, don't they? If this were really happening, they wouldn't all be giggling so much, right? Sitting there, watching the show unfold in all its inanity is mildly excruciating, like being slapped in the face by balloon after balloon, all wielded by idiot after idiot--it's not so bad at first, but a few minutes in you're red-faced and flinching. Why did...

Will Smith has hinted he really is a student of the Church of Scientology, after revealing he entrusts his fate to "patterns of the universe".
The actor has always denied following the controversial faith, which was founded by science-fiction author L. Ron Hubbard, despite best pal Tom Cruise being a prominent member.
He recently described himself as a "student of all religions" claiming, "I don't necessarily believe in organised religion. I love my God, my higher power, but it is mine and mine alone."
But, during an appearance on American breakfast programme The Today Show on Monday, Smith confessed he looks to the heavens when plotting his future.
He says, "Choreographed is a rough word. I study the patterns of the universe. I watch how things happen, because they happen the same way over and over again.
"Definitely plot it out in advance. But I would say, as far as hitting the mark for exactly where I'm aiming, that's kind of rare. There's a flow of the universe that I've grown to know just how to go with it."

Model Lauren Hutton has hit out at Sex And The City's portrayal of promiscuous women - blaming "gay writers" for creating the stereotype that single women are "sluts".
During a bizarre rant on U.S. breakfast programme The Today Show on Thursday, Hutton confessed she had never seen TV hit Sex and the City - but she claimed it promoted the untrue myth that it's natural for women to be sexually promiscuous.
She said, "It's written by guys, who happen to be gay, who are sluts. That's what I think.
"Let's face it most men are sluts. That's what testosterone is supposed to do. As a hunter, if you stayed alive after 30, nature wanted your genes out there. Women were just trying to get the best sperm to make a masterpiece.
"You have a bunch a guys who are sluts, writing for women and telling them they are supposed to act like this."
