Trailer - Charlie Kaufman's 'Synecdoche, New York'

18 September 2008 2:02 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

What the hell did I just watch? Wow...even by Charlie Kaufman standards, this trailer for Synecdoche, New York is truly out there.

Kaufman, if you don't know is the most inventive screenwriter in Hollywood, with Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to his credit. Synecdoche is his first film as a director, and it doesn't look like something anybody else could've made, save for an on-the-march Terry Gilliam.

The cast is exceptional - Philip Seymour Hoffman, Hope Davis, Dianne Wiest, Catherine Keener, Samantha Morton, and Michelle Williams, among others. But, man, is this strange. Strange can be a good thing, of course, but...yeah.

Synecdoche, New York opens in limited release on October 24th.

John Malkovich Interview, Burn After Reading, Toronto 2008

8 September 2008 7:33 AM, PDT | From Spout.com | See recent Spout news

John Malkovich enjoyed a particularly high spike in popularity and geek credit when he appeared in Charlie Kaufman's Being John Malkovich, but he's been in more than 20 films since then and he hasn't managed to have that lightning strike twice. He was excellent as the poseur art teacher in the otherwise disappointing Art School Confidential, and while he turns in a great performance in Burn After Reading, neither one stands above anything else he's done. Maybe he should actually try playing a jewel thief to see what he can do with that role. Find out what he thought about working with the Coens and dropping the f-bomb a lot in the interview after the break. This role se ...

The apocalypse goes indie in Apocalypse, CA

8 August 2008 1:38 PM, PDT | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

I do love it when someone says the name Six String Samurai, and that's even without seeing the great photography and insane storyline planned for this little indie. "A modern day dark comedy, Apocalypse, CA is the story of a group of friends as they prepare for certain death at the hands of an approaching asteroid. Wry, cynical and full of off-beat humor, Apocalypse, CA is in the vein of films like "Being John Malkovich", "Six-String Samurai", and "Garden State". The film is currently in post-production and theres a demo reel of footage after the break. We'll keep an eye on this one!

George Lucas Wants a Fifth 'Indiana Jones' Movie. That Makes One of Us

28 July 2008 3:06 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

I remember an e-mail I received after I gave a Two Damn Dirty Ape review to Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. In my review, I stated that George Lucas had lost it. He was never a great writer, though a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, he was a very good creator. There's a difference. Lucas was truly a master at devising worlds for adventure, but dialogue and scene construction has never been his strong suit. And by the time he made Episode I, Lucas hadn't directed anything in over 20 years. The resulting film was sturdy but not terrific.

I felt Episode II had more things wrong with it than right with it, and I said so. The e-mail I received said that one day soon, George Lucas would show me how wrong I was. And while Lucas has always exhibited an ability to make gobs of money,

Cannes Competitors Announced

23 April 2008 10:20 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Clint Eastwood's Changeling, starring Angelina Jolie, will compete for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival next month, festival organizers announced today (Wednesday) as they unveiled the titles of 19 movies, selected from 1,792 films submitted from 96 countries, that will vie for the prestigious award. (A 20th film, from France, is due to be announced soon.) Steven Soderbergh's four-hour film Che, about Cuban revolutionary hero Che Guevara, will also contend for the prized trophy. German director Wim Wenders will be coming to the festival with his Palermo Shooting. U.S. screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) is also entered in the competition with his first film as a director, Synecdoch, New York, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. "There are films that are hair-raising because they break new ground," festival president Gilles Jacob told a news conference in Paris. Among U.S. films screening out of competition will be the Steven Spielberg-George Lucas production of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull; Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, starring Penélope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem; and the animated DreamWorks comedy Kung-Fu Panda, featuring the voices of Jolie, Jack Black, Lucy Liu and Dustin Hoffman. The festival runs from May 14 to May 25.
