SNL On Thursday Holds Its Own Against Stiff Competition

10 October 2008 10:37 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Although it was up against the season premiere of CBS's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which accounted for the best ratings of the season with a 14.1 rating and a 22 share, and ABC's Grey's Anatomy, which recorded a 10.1/15, Saturday Night Live Weekend Update held its own with a 7.1/11 Thursday night. The figure was particularly impressive given the fact that its lead-in, The Office, placed fourth in the time period with a 5.2/8. The show also beat the L.A. Dodgers-Philadelphia Phillies playoff game on Fox, which averaged a 6.2/10. Disappointing many viewers who had tuned in hoping to see another Tina Fey ribbing of Sarah Palin, Fey did not appear on the show. (Throughout the week there had been rumors of a Fey-Palin encounter.) The biggest surprise was the appearance of one "William Murray" in the crowd watching the faux Obama-McCain town-hall debate to ask what the candidates thought about the Chicago Cubs chances. (The bit was not far off the mark. In 1960, Richard Nixon and John Kennedy were taken to task by critics for failing to mention Pittsburgh Pirate Bill Mazeroski's World Series-winning 9th-inning homerun against the New York Yankees, which occurred a few hours prior to the third presidential debate.)

CBS Takes Over First Place Again

8 October 2008 10:32 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

CBS returned to its usual position at the top of the Nielsen weekly ratings list last week, with its largely unheralded NCIS rising to second place in its season debut. The network also saw solid results for its new series The Mentalist, which followed NCIS. The strong showing for the network was particularly striking considering the fact that its biggest draw, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, does not make its season debut until this week. But while CBS's overall audience was up for the week, most of ABC's and NBC's shows were down sharply. For the week, CBS averaged a 7.0 rating and a 12 share. (It also won among adults 18-49.) ABC came in second with an average 6.0/10. NBC placed third with a 6.0/10, while Fox trailed with a 4.0/6.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 12.2/18; 2. NCIS, CBS, 11.0./17; 3. 60 Minutes, CBS, 10.5/17; 4. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 10.2/15; 5. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 10.0/15; 6. The Mentalist, CBS, 9.8/15; 7. CSI: NY, CBS, 9.6/16; 8. Criminal Minds, CBS, 9.5/15; 9. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.2/15; 10. NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC, 8.8/14.

Petersen Hints About CSI Movie

2 October 2008 12:18 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Departing CSI: Crime Scene Investigation star William Petersen has hinted he'll return for a big screen version of the hit TV drama.

The actor, who will give up his role as forensics expert Gil Grissom on the show during the forthcoming season, admits there have been talks about turning the series into a blockbuster movie for years - and it still might come off.

Petersen, who will stay on as a producer of the show after his departure this autumn, says, "I'd love to see us make a CSI film... That's the reason Grissom isn't going to die of a brain tumour.

"It would be good if we did it (film) right. The whole world is interested in the show... (but) you have to make sure it's not just an extended episode."

Lauren Conrad and Kyle Howard Spotted Making Out

29 September 2008 10:48 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Refusing to confirm their much reported romance, Lauren Conrad and Kyle Howard apparently simply let their public display of affection (Pda) do the talking as they've been spotted kissing all night during an outing at Teddy's. Still neither of them has come out of the closet about their love relationship though.

Lauren and Kyle visited Teddy's on Saturday night, September 27. There the twosome was seen engaging in "some serious public display of affection," E! Online reports. "They were making out and just totally being a couple," a source testified, adding "they were kissing all night."

That wasn't the first time Lauren and Kyle were spotted together. They, in fact, were often seen together all over the town. However, a representative for her declined to comment on the stars' alleged romance.

Lauren is best known for her starring role in MTV's reality series "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County". She currently

NBC Wins By A Touchdown

24 September 2008 10:38 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

NBC continued to mow down the competition in what was officially the last week of the summer season, with Sunday Night Football attracting an astonishing 22.2 million viewers. On Fox the season debut of Fox's House also proved potent as it attracted 14.8 million. It also boosted the ratings of Fringe, which followed and which held on to 13.3 million of those viewers. The figure was half again as many as those who tuned in to the series premiere. On the other hand, ABC's telecast of the 60th annual Primetime Emmys drew just 12.3 million viewers, the lowest in the awards show history. Meanwhile, in cable ratings, Espn continued to dominate thanks to Monday Night Football, which drew more viewers than any show on the broadcast networks. Its first four games have averaged 13.32 million viewers, up 27 percent over last year. Bad economic news brought good news to Fox News Channel, which became the most-viewed cable network in primetime except for Espn. The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC, 13.3/21; 2. 60 Minutes, CBS, 9.2/15; 3. House, Fox, 8.9/14; 4. Sunday Night NFL Pre-kickoff, NBC, 8.5/14; 5. Primetime Emmy Awards, ABC, 8.2/13; 6. Actor Laurence Fishburne has praised William Petersen since replacing his character on hit U.S. TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - because he raised standards for television.

Petersen - one of the show's original cast members - is set to leave his post as crime investigator Gil Grissom, though he will remain an executive producer on the series.

His absence is marked by Fishburne's debut in the show's forthcoming 10th season next month.

Presenting an award at Sunday's 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Petersen said: "I'm honoured to hand over the keys to the lab to a wonderful actor and a new friend, Mister Laurence Fishburne."

The actor responded by humbly adding: "Thank you Billy, I just hope I can live up to the high standards you've set not only for the first CSI series but for the many CSI series that have followed in your footsteps."

Actor Paul Reubens has denied reports he will make a return to TV opposite Laurence Fishburne in hit U.S. show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

The Pee-wee Herman star was rumoured to have been recruited by Fishburne after the actor was cast in the series to replace William Petersen earlier this month.

A source tells the National Enquirer that Fishburne wanted Reubens "to play... a psychopathic killer after something goes horribly wrong in his life," in a bid to help the actor revive his career, adding, "The only person who can possibly reach him is Fishburne."

But Reubens' spokesperson Carrie Byalick has denied the reports, telling WENN: "That story is false."
