Kassovitz Blames Fox For Disastrous Movie

27 August 2008 9:05 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz has blamed Twentieth Century Fox bosses for savagely editing his forthcoming film Babylon A.D., comparing the final cut to "a bad episode of 24".

The French director insists studio executives battled against him throughout the sci-fi movie's production, first slashing his budget and later cutting out 15 minutes of the film he believed to be crucial to the plot.

He says, "I'm very unhappy with the film. I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn't respected. Bad producers, bad partners - it was a terrible experience.

"It's pure violence and stupidity... All the action scenes had a goal: They were supposed to be driven by either a metaphysical point of view or experience for the characters.

"Instead parts of the movie are like a bad episode of 24."

Now Kassovitz admits he regrets striking a deal with the corporation in the first place.

He adds: "I should have chosen a studio that has guts. Fox was just trying to get a PG-13 (rated) movie. I'm ready to go to war against them, but I can't because they don't give a s**t."

Sutherland: 'I Am Paid Too Much'

26 August 2008 9:06 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland has confessed he doesn't deserve the millions he earns for his profession.

The 24 star believes actors are paid too much for their job and admits those working in the emergency services are more deserving of the money.

He says, "The kind of money generated around the industry is way out of proportion. The admiration bestowed on actors is also out of perspective.

"Doctors are the stars of our society - people like my grandfather who was responsible for the health care in Canada - as well as teachers, firefighters and police officers."

Movie Reviews: Mirrors

19 August 2008 10:38 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The horror film Mirrors, starring Kiefer Sutherland of 24 fame, which opened without being screened for critics, was reviewed by them over the weekend. It received the expected pans. Mark Olsen in the Los Angeles Times called it "ridiculous" and added, "Mirrors reflects back nothing." Jeanette Catsoulis in the New York Times commented that Sutherland "is believably beleaguered, though not even as Jack Bauer did he ever pull a gun on a nun. It's good to see him stretch." But, addressing Sutherland, Roger Moore wrote in the Orlando Sentinel, "There's got to be more of an excuse for this than 'this is all I could line up for my hiatus from 24.'" And Bruce DeMara in the Toronto Star concluded "In a film that features scads of broken mirrors, the recipients of the proverbial bad luck seem to be those who unwisely bought a ticket."

Extras Shoot-out Response Shocks Sutherland

17 August 2008 7:10 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The South African extras on the set of 24 - when the TV drama relocated to Cape Town - were so convincing in violent scenes, filming had to be halted to check they were okay.

24 star Kiefer Sutherland admits intense shooting scenes in South Africa were given an extra edge from locals who had experienced real violence at first hand.

The actor explains, "The people were great. To have the tone and the voice and their perspective - we just had everything from the extras to all the African talent. They were amazing.

"We had extras on a street shoot-out scene and they literally hit the pavement during the shoot-out. We had to stop because we thought people got hurt.

"These people were willing to do this eight hours a day, and they were glad to do it. Extras were coming up with ideas. Finally we just said, 'All of you, just do what you want.'"

Sutherland Wants 24 In Theatres

13 August 2008 6:57 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actor Kiefer Sutherland is desperate to debut his hit show 24 on the big screen - but only after the TV series is cancelled.

The Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning show has enjoyed mega success with American audiences since its debut in 2001, and though Sutherland is convinced his character is destined for a movie debut, he admits he's worried the project would upset the over-worked series' writers.

He says, "We're going to eventually (make a 24 movie) one day - if (fans) are still interested by then.

"It's so hard for the writers to just even get through the season. They're very good, but it's just the equivalent of making 12 films a year and then they have to come up with a whole new idea in the break for the next year.

"So we all agreed to preserve the series, just to focus on that - and then, when the series is done, we would embark on the film."

Sutherland's Prison Soap Fear

9 August 2008 7:05 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actor Kiefer Sutherland went without soap during his jail stint last Christmas - after dropping the bar in the communal showers.

The 24 star was sentenced to 48 days in jail after he was caught driving under the influence in Los Angeles last September.

He subsequently spent his 41st birthday, Christmas and New Year's Eve behind bars.

Sutherland has now broken his silence about his time behind bars, joking, "I dropped the soap!"

He continues: "I actually dropped the soap. I remember looking down at it and then I looked around and thought: 'Soap is over-rated... I'm done with this shower!'"

Speaking last month, the actress told People.com pregnancy had been "scary and exciting," but she regretted asking friends and family for advice.

She said, "The closer I get to having this child, the more I'm letting advice go in one ear and out the other. Everyone has their own thing."

24 Ditches Real Time For TV Movie

15 July 2008 11:59 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

TV bosses are ditching drama show 24's real time format for a two-hour movie that will kick off the seventh series.

Producers of the show, including star Kiefer Sutherland, opted for the special episode, so they could experiment with main character Jack Bauer, and without abandoning the concept in the regular season.

Sutherland explains, "We had originally started out in Africa at the beginning of season seven. We would literally, after four episodes, have to say, '16 hours later.' And no one felt good about that.

"So we ended up having to scrap that storyline. This was a fantastic opportunity to do that storyline and set everything else up with that and allow us to go to Africa."

Shooting on season seven is currently underway.

Sutherland Thankful He Kept His Job

24 star Kiefer Sutherland is thankful he kept his job after spending Christmas in jail for drink driving.

The actor was sentenced to 48 days in jail after he was caught driving under the influence in Los Angeles last September.

He subsequently spent his 41st birthday, Christmas and New Year's Eve behind bars.

Now free and back on the set of hit show 24, Sutherland is counting his blessings - because his stupidity could have cost him his job.

He says, "I made a really dumb mistake, and to be able to get back to work, which is something I feel comfortable doing and is a safe place for me, I was grateful to have that opportunity.

"I have friends who have made similar mistakes who have not been that lucky."

DVD Targets TV Torture Plots

14 July 2008 10:37 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Ken Robinson, a former Army Special Forces intelligence officer, who created the shortlived series E-Ring in 2005 for Jerry Bruckheimer Productions and NBC, has been using his experience to try to convince network television executives and program producers that the usual portrayal of torture as an effective method to obtain information from prisoners is ineffective and often counter-productive, the Chicago Tribune reported today (Monday). In one episode, a U.S. soldier being tortured by his captors offers bad misinformation to stop the torture. (The series was canceled in the U.S. before the episode aired, the newspaper observed.) Robinson and other former intelligence officers are now being featured in a DVD, Primetime Torture, being distributed to 1,200 educators and military trainers, in which they argue the case against torture and say that Hollywood's favorable depiction of torture in shows like 24 sends the wrong message to military members who view them.
