CBS returned to its usual position at the top of the Nielsen weekly ratings list last week, with its largely unheralded NCIS rising to second place in its season debut. The network also saw solid results for its new series The Mentalist, which followed NCIS. The strong showing for the network was particularly striking considering the fact that its biggest draw, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, does not make its season debut until this week. But while CBS's overall audience was up for the week, most of ABC's and NBC's shows were down sharply. For the week, CBS averaged a 7.0 rating and a 12 share. (It also won among adults 18-49.) ABC came in second with an average 6.0/10. NBC placed third with a 6.0/10, while Fox trailed with a 4.0/6.

NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs will return home on the October 14 episode of "NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service". Titled "Heartland", the episode will unearth Gibbs' mysterious past when he goes home for a murder investigation.

The team are led to Gibbs' hometown when a pair of Marines are ambushed. In the city that holds his childhood, Gibbs has to face one tough factor, his father. Obviously been ages since he comes to visit his father, Gibbs has to answer a series of questions proposed by his dad. Ralph Waite of "The Waltons" guest stars as Gibbs' dad.

"NCIS", premiered on September 23, has garnered CBS the title as the most watched in the second week of October after absorbing 17.5 million viewers through its 6.03 episode that was aired on October 7.

The first week of the new season was won easily by ABC, thanks to such big ratings grabbers as Dancing With the Stars, Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. CBS and NBC, meanwhile, saw their ratings tumble as they were unable to offer a full slate of new programs due to lasting effects of the writers' strike. ABC averaged a 7.8 rating and a 13 share for the week. CBS placed second with a 7.1/12. Fox placed third with a 5.2/8, while NBC, which had shown solid results during the summer months, slid back to last place again with a 4.6/7.

The new season of "NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service" has been given a sneak peek from the first episode that reveals which officer got killed. The sixth season will start airing on CBS tonight, September 23 at 8:00 P.M with "Last Man Standing" as season opener.

Earlier this month CBS have released a bunch of photos as a tease to the first episode where agent Ziva David is dressed in a sexy backless gown and singing. While this may puzzle some fans, it is explained in the sneak peek video that she is in Morocco, singing in a bar while noticing a group of people in the audience.

Last Thursday night's televised address by Sen. Barack Obama to the Democratic Convention may have drawn 30.2 million viewers, but they were divided up among the broadcast and cable networks and barely showed up in the Nielsen Media Research's top-ten list of broadcast shows. NBC held on to its lead as the most-watched network following its overwhelming domination a week earlier with its Olympics coverage. It once again aired the highest-rated show of the week, the unflagging game show Deal or No Deal, as well as two episodes of America's Got Talent, which finished in second and third place. CBS was close behind with repeats of Two and a Half Men, 60 Minutes, and NCIS. Overall, NBC averaged a 3.8 rating and a 7 share for the week. CBS placed second with a 3.6/6. Fox took third with a 3.0/5, while ABC trailed with a 2.8/5.

NBC's telecast of the Beijing Olympics last week left its competition in the dust as each day of coverage took one of the top-seven spots on Nielsen Media Research's ratings list. The "Beijing Closing Party" took an eighth. Overall, the network's primetime coverage averaged 23.3 million viewers with 27.8 million tuning in to Sunday's closing ceremonies. While the ratings of all of the other networks' primetime programs sagged under the weight of the Olympics' audience, the Fox and CBS coverage of preseason football was particularly hard hit, with each game drawing just over 4 million viewers. But the biggest loser of all may have been ABC/Disney's High School Musical: Get in the Picture, which debuted with critics' predictions of a sure-fire hit. But initial ratings for the show proved to be lackluster, and by last week fewer than 2 million viewers tuned in. Commented Washington Post TV writer Lisa de Moraes, "Since July, this show has managed to frighten off almost 50 percent of the crowd that was at least curious enough to watch the first episode."

If a week had ten days, all of the top ten television shows last week would have been Beijing Summer Olympics telecasts. Even the other three programs that made it into the top ten attracted fewer than 25 percent of the viewers who tuned in to the Olympics telecasts. Thus far the Beijing Games are attracting more viewers than any other non-domestic Olympics telecast. Last week they averaged 28.7 million viewers, exceeded only by the Atlanta Games in 1996, when they averaged 32.1 million. Meanwhile, the three other major networks' ratings sank to record lows. Especially surprising may have been the fact that the Saturday Olympics telecasts ranked third on the list, seemingly defying the conventional industry wisdom that viewers abandon their TV sets on Saturday nights. Searching back, analysts discovered that the Saturday telecast was actually exceeded by an episode of The Golden Girls in 1990 and that the sitcom typically drew such large audiences back then. Overall, NBC averaged a 9.6 rating and a 28 share for the week. CBS followed in second place with a 1.3 rating and a 4 share. Fox placed third with a 1.2/4, edging out ABC with a 1.1/3.

Some 32 million viewers tuned in to watch Michael Phelps take his fourth and fifth gold medals in the 200-meter butterfly and the 800 freestyle relay at the Beijing Summer Olympics Tuesday night -- the best Tuesday-night audience recorded by NBC since 2002 during the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The telecast's closest competitor for the night was a repeat of CBS's NCIS with 7.2 million viewers. Reporting on the results, today's (Thursday) New York Times asked in a headline, "So Who Exactly Is Watching Those Reruns of NCIS?" Well, according to Nielsen figures, the NCIS audience was down just 15 percent from its average this summer, not a particularly hard hit given the strength of what TV journalists are calling the "Olympics juggernaut."

NCIS star Pauley Perrette has been accused of spinning her ex-husband's life into a storyline from her TV show, by alleging he stalked and raped her friend.

The actress' ex, indie rocker Coyote Shivers, insists Perrette is seeking revenge by falsely accusing him of raping and sodomising a close friend, because she's still bitter about their 2006 divorce.

Shivers has responded to Perrette and her friend Angela Garber's claims in two sarcastic videos posted on file-sharing website YouTube.com, aimed at discrediting her accusations.

In one mocking video, the rocker says, "Hi, I'm Coyote Shivers, and I'm a racist and a kidnapper."

Shivers, 42, and Perrette, 39, married in 2000.

Since their break up, Perrette has also alleged that she was the victim of spousal abuse during their marriage.

The couple separated in 2004 before settling its divorce in February 2006.

Some 14.5 million people were singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" last week, making Fox's coverage of Major League Baseball's All-Star Game the most-watched telecast of the week. (The figure represented only the primetime segment of the telecast, which stretched past 1:00 a.m. as the game went into extra innings. From 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., it averaged 11 million viewers, more than the number that watched any other show in primetime during the week.) NBC's America's Got Talent remained the top show of the summer season last week, drawing 12.7 million viewers, the most to tune in to any network program since the season began in late May, according to Nielsen Media Research. ABC's new Wipeout finished in second place with 10.6 million. Among other new shows, CBS's Greatest American Dog barked up the right tree for 9.5 million viewers to take fifth place. The major television networks recorded their lowest ratings of the year last week, as CBS came out on top with an average 4.2 rating and an 8 share, representing 6.3 million viewers. Latest: A missing woman who sparked a search led by NCIS star Pauley Perrette has been found.

The actress launched a public appeal to help find her missing pal Lami Nicole Powlesland over the weekend.

Powlesland vanished last week (ends11Jun08) and officials were contacted when her belongings were found on a popular hiking trail.

A relieved Perrette has since revealed her friend is alive and well.

She tells U.S. news show Entertainment Tonight, "Thankfully, this one has a happy ending. I was with the missing girl's parents at my church when we got the call that she was found."

Perrette, who plays a criminologist on TV, admits she's grateful to all the police who took part in an extensive search over the weekend.

She adds, "They were amazing in their late-night search."

Game 3 of the NBA Finals Tuesday night averaged 14.5 million viewers during primetime, 55 percent more than the 9.0 million who tuned in for Game 3 a year ago, according to Nielsen Media Research. The ABC telecast, which saw the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in a low-scoring (87-81) contest, averaged a 6.9 rating and a 12 share. Ratings for the contest appear to have rebounded from last year's Cleveland vs. San Antonio series, with all three games up an average of 55 percent. Tonight's (Thursday) Game 4, which will see the Lakers try to even out the series is expected to draw an even larger audience. Earlier, a Jimmy Kimmel Live show and the NBA pregame show averaged a 5.4/10. They were beaten by a repeat of the CBS drama NCIS, which scored a 6.8/12.

The first two games of the NBA finals produced the best initial ratings for the championship series in four years. Sunday's telecast, which drew 13.5 million viewers, attracted an audience that was 60 percent larger than the comparable game a year ago.
