Housewives No Longer So Desperate

5 May 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The audience for Abc's Desperate Housewives appeared to be returning to the show Sunday after two weeks in which its ratings sank to their lowest levels ever. While Nielsen numbers for the show continued to come in below their previous highs, Sunday's edition was easily the top-rated show of the night, with 16.63 million viewers tuning in, resulting in a 10.8 rating and a 17 share. Analysts attributed the ratings boost to a general realization among viewers that new episodes are returning after the long hiatus that followed the writers' strike. ABC also saw its shows on each side of Housewives perform solidly as well. At 8:00 p.m., Extreme Makeover: Home Edition tied with Cbs's Cold Case for the lead with a 7.4/13. And at 10:00 p.m., Abc's Brothers & Sisters far outdistanced the competition with a 7.5/13.

Idol, Dancing Repeat

2 April 2008 11:34 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Ratings results last week looked pretty much like they did the week before, with Fox's American Idol claiming the first two spots in the Nielsen top ten and Abc's Dancing With the Stars taking the next two spots. In fact, their margin of victory appeared so great that it appeared likely that they would continue to claim those rankings while both of them remained on the air this season. Only two scripted shows finished in the top ten, Cbs's Csi: Miami, which finished fifth, and Cbs's Two and a Half Men, which finished eighth. Overall, CBS won the week with a 6.1 rating and a 10 share. Fox followed close behind with a 5.9/10. ABC placed third with a 5.7/9, while NBC trailed with a 5.1/8. Meanwhile, on cable, Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards telecast reportedly averaged 7.4 million viewers on Saturday, making it the most-watched show on cable for the week. It was also the top program on all of television for children. The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 15.2/24; 2. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 14.0/21; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 13.0/20; 4. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 11.0/17; 5. Csi: Miami, CBS, 10.3/17; 6. Ncaa Basketball Sunday (Postgame), CBS, 8.9/16; 7. 60 Minutes, CBS, 8.7/14; 8. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 8.6/13; 9. Celebrity Apprentice, NBC, 7.7/13; 10. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition ABC, 7.5/12.

Fox Takes Lead As Season's No. 1 Network

19 March 2008 10:13 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

During a week in which Fox Broadcasting took over the lead from CBS to become the most-watched network of the season, the show that put it there, American Idol, drew more viewers than all its competition combined. Tuesday's "performance" edition drew 29.88 million viewers, while Wednesday's "results" show was not far behind with 27.13 million. It was a different tale with Fox's Canterbury's Law, which drew 7.72 million in its premiere on Monday night and the debut of Friday night's The Return of Jezebel James was shot down with only 3.18 million viewers. For the week, Fox averaged a 6.8 rating and an 11 share, representing 11.3 million viewers. CBS and NBC tied for second place with a 5.0/8, while ABC trailed with a 4.0/7. Meanwhile, veteran media journalist Alex Ben Block, in his online Hollywood Today report, noted that all of the major broadcast networks continue to lose viewers. Citing a report prepared for ad agency Rubin Postaer, Block noted that network viewership is down as much as 12 percent since September, with only ABC showing improvement over last year. The report blames the writers' strike, changes in the way Nielsen measures audiences, a glut of reality shows and the failure of network TV to produce a single breakout hit this season. The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 16.9/26; 2. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 15.8/24; 3. Law and Order, NBC, 7.9/13; 3. Survivor: Micronesia, CBS, 7.9/13; 5. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 7.6/12; 6. Lost, ABC, 7.5/12; 7. Deal or No Deal (Monday), NBC, 7.4/11; 8. 60 Minutes, CBS, 7.3/13; 8. Csi: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 7.3/11; 10. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, ABC, 7.1/11.

There's Idol -- And Everything Else

5 March 2008 10:28 AM, PST | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Thanks largely to three episodes of American Idol, Fox scored its eighth straight weekly victory last week. With each of the Idol shows drawing nearly 30 million viewers, the shows that followed them were also able to claim solid numbers even with fewer than half the audience of the Idol lead-ins. ABC was also a big winner last week with 15.7 million viewers tuning in to Oprah's Big Give on Sunday night and 12.7 million watching the TV movie A Raisin in the Sun the previous Monday. CBS held up adequately with a steady diet of reruns in the wake of the writers' strike, drawing its biggest numbers (12.5 million) for 60 Minutes and Survivor, two of the few original shows it currently airs. With the exception of Abc's TV movie and its hit drama Lost, all of the other top-ten programs were shows produced without WGA or SAG employees. The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 16.0/24; 2. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 15.7/24; 3. American Idol (Thursday), Fox, 14.9/23; 4. Oprah's Big Give, ABC, 9.5/15; 5. Deal or No Deal (Monday), NBC, 9.2/14; 6. ABC Premiere Event: A Raisin in the Sun, ABC, 8.6/13; 7. Don't Forget the Lyrics, Fox, 8.4/13; 7. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, ABC, 8.4/13; 9. 60 Minutes, CBS, 8.1/13; 10. Law and Order, NBC, 7.7/13; 10. Lost, ABC, 7.7/12.
