  • Anachronisms: Several characters can be seen playing an Xbox game console, which was not released until 2001.

  • Revealing mistakes: Two times throughout the movie, two characters are seen playing on a Xbox console, although the screen shows that only one player is currently playing. If two people were playing, the screen would be divided in half.

  • Anachronisms: During the scene in Mazursky's house you see a promo poster for the Xbox game "Men of Valor" on his fridge when in actual the game was not yet released. Men of Valor was released on October 19 2004

  • Factual errors: Near the end of the movie, when Johnny's in the red truck going to his Dad's house we see the front of the red truck with a New Mexico license plate on it- except New Mexico only uses one license plate, on the back of the vehicle.

  • Anachronisms: When Zack Mazursky escapes his home, you can see 3 posters on his bedroom wall: a Hidden in Plain View poster, which promotes their 2003 self-titled CD, an I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody's Business Poster, which promotes their 2004 self-titled CD, and a Drive-Thru Records poster, which promotes their stage on the 2002 Vans Warped Tour. All posters were released years later than the movie's setting, which is set in 1999.

  • Factual errors: The dates listed in the movie are incorrect. The morning of Zack Mazursky's kidnapping is stated as Friday November 6, 1999. November 6, 1999 was actually a Saturday.

  • Anachronisms: The movie starts in 1999, but in the early part of the movie when "Johnny Truelove" is at the liquor store awaiting "the drop", there is a silver 2002+ Toyota Camry in the scene.

  • Continuity: When Jake Mazursky gets into the fight at the party while looking for Truelove, he is hit with a glass bottle and his head begins to bleed. At the end of the fight there is no blood or sign that he was hit by the bottle.

  • Continuity: The blood on Jake's head disappears during the fight in the apartment.

  • Errors in geography: The Grn Apple Tree baseball tee worn by Frankie late in the film would not be released until the mid 2000's. Magic Hat beer is seen in several different scenes, but Magic Hat is not sold outside of the North East US states. The film takes place in CA.

  • Continuity: When Jake is dunking Truelove's head into the pool, Truelove's dog runs out and starts tugging on Jake's right leg. In the next shot when Jake is being pulled off of Truelove and away from the pool his right leg is now coming out of the pool as he is being dragged away.

  • Miscellaneous: In the menage-a-trois scene in the pool between Zack, Julie and Alma, there's a moment on which Alma jumps a little bit out of the water exposing her left breast for an instant. There you can see she's using a patch that covers her nipple.

  • Anachronisms: There are several background vehicles visible, that are clearly newer than 1999 (the year in which the plot is set) - for example 2001 Volvo V70, 2005 Chrysler Town & Country, 2001 GMC Yukon Denali, 2003 Toyota Sequoia etc.

  • Anachronisms: When in the apartment towards the end of the movie, Trulove and his girlfriend are "trying" to have sex. The music playing in the background (on what clearly is a radio in the room) is the song "Slither" by Tech N9ne. This song appeared on the album "Absolute Power" which was not released until 2002. The movie takes place in 1999.
