I announce it to be high time to re-examine the Matrix franchise. New stuff has come to light, like the release of V For Vendetta and Speed Racer and other action/sci-fi films that have utilized special effects we first saw here. Are these films still mind-blowing adventures into sick, unknown realms? Or is it just a lot of pompous, pseudo-intellectual speechifying? The live-action trilogy plus The Animatrix is now collected into one dynamite Blu-ray package. Above is an exclusive clip Warner Home Entertainment threw our way to remind us all about the red pill.

Cult comic-book writer Alan Moore looks like a Monty Python cave-hermit, and given his frequent cantankerous pronouncements about politics, magic, and creators' rights, he seems like a dark, foreboding figure. But as anyone who's had the pleasure of chatting with Moore can attest, he's an agreeable sort, generous with his time and his dry wit. Moore can be prickly to people and institutions who disappoint him, but even the old friends and comic-book companies he won't talk to anymore still speak of Moore in glowing terms, and note how much they miss interacting with a man who makes life more interesting. Dez Vylenz's documentary The Mindscape Of Alan Moore consists of a 70-minute monologue in which Moore offers a little detail about his working-class upbringing and early career, and reveals what led to books like V For Vendetta, The Watchmen, and From Hell. Vylenz then illustrates Moore's words with.

We haven’t gotten much reader response to any posts about Astro Boy in the past, but maybe that will all change now that details about the film are being set in stone.
The latest news is that Astro Boy will be released on October 23, 2009. The CGI film will follow the original manga/anime’s tale about a far-off future in which a brilliant scientist creates a revolutionary new robot to replace his dead son-a robot who is able to kick major butt while searching for a meaning to his existence. Think of it as Pinocchio meets Transformers.
(Details from the official press release follow.)
Astro Boy is coming to theaters courtesy of Imagi Studios (V For Vendetta) and Summit Entertainment. It will feature the voice work of Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy and Eugene Levy, with Freddie Highmore (The Spiderwick Chronicles) in the title role. Hottie

In a conversation with the Los Angeles Times, renowned comics writer Alan Moore, the delightfully twisted mind behind works such as From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V For Vendetta, and Watchmen, has declared his expected dislike of the upcoming big-screen adaptation of his groundbreaking graphic novel which deals with troubled former superheroes grappling with their own psyches as well as the end of the world. “There are three or four companies now that exist for the sole purpose of creating not comics, but storyboards for films,” he said to the Times’ Geoff Bucher. “It may be true that the only reason the comic book industry now exists is for this purpose, to create characters for movies, board [...]

Call him what you want; an artist, a genius, a visionary, a loon, or just a guy that looks a lot like Rasputin, but whatever you call Alan Moore these days you better include the words "influential" and "hot Hollywood property." For me though, the man, his personal work, and his thoughts far outweigh the films that have been made out of his work (though I admit to really liking V For Vendetta). Alan Moore is also extremely hard to get in front of a microphone and even harder to get on camera. He doesn't care about fame and couldn't be arsed to followed the news of how films of his work do at the box office which is why this DVD is actually on my radar. Somehow though, director DeZ Vylenz and The Disinformation Company got Moore to sit down to a 2 hour interview around which they made the documentary in question.

According to several reports, including Bloody-Disgusting and Fangoria, Natalie Portman (V For Vendetta, Star Wars, The Professional) will star in the upcoming remake of Dario Argento's classic film Suspiria! Portman's production company Handsome Charlie Films is supposedly producing the film. (Although Fangoria reports that Creative Artists is currently shopping the film.) David Gordon Green (who's latest movie Pineapple Express is now playing in theaters this week) will write and direct. Portman will play the role of an American dancer originated by Jessica Harper in Argento's movie. More when we hear it!

Alan Moore, the writer of renowned comic book Watchmen, has attacked director Zack Snyder for bringing his creation to the big screen. When asked by Entertainment Weekly if he was curious about Snyder's version of his story, he replied: "I would rather not know." Moore, who previously disowned the Warner Bros adaptation of his comic V For Vendetta, voiced his disapproval of Snyder due to his involvement with 300. "He's the person who made 300. I've not seen any recent comic book films, but I didn't particularly like the book 300," (more)
