Fans of Showtime's The L Word should start gearing up for the upcoming final season of series, which is set to join two other shows premiering in January. Tagged by Showtime as a “fab female triple-header,” January 18 will see the final episode of The L Word premiering, followed by the comedy United States of Tara and the second season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
We previously reported that The L Word will be spawning a spin-off, which Showtime CEO Matt Blank says will come from the “storyline at the end of The L Word, the final episode in the final season, [in which] there will be an open-ended component to it.”
"[Creator] Ilene [Chaiken] is going to carry that story along on the Internet, which we think is an interesting way to keep The L Word experience going," he explained. "Then if we decide to go ahead with the spinoff that storyline

Fifteen years after this city was reborn, it's about time we had a "Dazed and Con fused" or "Sixteen Candles" or "Superbad" set in Man hattan. "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist" is in the special ed class compared to those valedictorians, but it has a dogged all-night charm and a sense of who its audience is.
As a comedy, the movie is so thin that its entire complement of funny lines pretty much fits on the poster. ("I refuse to be the goody bag at your pity party" channels the spirit of "Juno" - as does the

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings
Directed by Peter Sollett
Rated PG-13
One of the best things that can be said about Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is that there's very little not to like about it. That gives it a big advantage over a lot of teen comedies that throw a lot of surly, half-formed characters in situations where we're supposed to like them and overcrowd their story with pointless joke after joke after joke, hoping for the laughs they're not capable of creating organically.
Another huge factor here is that Nick and Norah is unabashedly sweet. That's a risk for a movie aimed at 18 - 24 year olds, but it definitely pays off. There are still problems with the movie, but it's one of those that could pleasantly surprise you if you're not expecting to be blown away.
Nick (Michael Cera) is the lovable loser.

Nick Norah’s Infinite Playlist causes deep-seated fear in my gut for the future of Michael Cera. Endearing throughout his span as George Michael in Arrested Development and then again as the rather unhip boyfriend in Juno, Cera has filled the awkward teenage niche like no other. If John Cusack was the brooding teen of the 80s and 90s, then Cera is the foot-in-his-mouth teen of the new millennium. Begging the question of what his life will look like when he can no longer fill the awkward teen shoes - Nick Norah’s Infinite Playlist is a look into that future. Nick (Michael Cera), of the fledgling, doomed for failure band The Jerk-off’s, recently found himself on the dumpage end of a relationship with unjustifiably popular girl Tris – but who hasn’t been there? It’s the beginning of the night they’ll remember forever and yet Nick appears

Sometimes, you just gotta let Disney have one. Historically, I'd say nobody in the industry comes close to marketing their films to their audience as well as The House of Mouse. This weekend is one of those times.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua should have an easy time of it, despite looking like, well, Beverly Hills Chihuahua. It's a family comedy about talking dogs and it's opening in 3,000 theaters, the widest release of the weekend. If, say, Body of Lies were opening here as well, it might be a different story, but that movie isn't until next week, so it should be smooth sailing this weekend for Chihuahua.
The other new release that has a fair amount of business coming its way is Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. I wouldn't expect Superbad or Juno numbers here for Michael Cera, but it has the potential to do $40 million or so in the long term.

Actor Michael Cera recently discussed some of the rough situations that he and the cast had while filming his latest movie, "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist."
The movie was shot almost entirely in New York, in areas such as Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Manhattan's Lower East Side. It took 29 days to film and was shot at night from 8:00 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Cera said that things would start to get rowdy in the early morning, with people watching the filming to go so far as to attack and throw things at the actors.
Cera told Parade Magazine during an interview, "Sometimes on Fridays or Saturdays if we were shooting at 2am and bars were letting out we'd get the spillover of drunk people."

Can anyone catch up to this cool cat? With Shia Labeouf's Eagle Eye taking the top spot at the box-office this weekend it makes four-in-a-row for the actor (not counting the animated Surf's Up) and it made me wonder if the 22-year-old is our next big time actor or if it's just a case of him starring in the right film at the right time that has made his films so popular leaving the title of "The Next Big Thing" up for grabs. Let's face it, Transformers and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were going to make big bucks no matter what, Shia had very little, if anything, to do with their success. One could make the argument that Disturbia opened during a very weak time in 2007 and that accounts for its three week box-office domination with rather modest numbers, winning that third weekend with barely over $9 million.

Screenwriter Diablo Cody about "Jennifer's Body in the Los Angeles Times: "But horror is a surprisingly feminist genre. The last person standing is usually a woman. And most of the guys in this movie are vain and insecure."
In the film directed by Karyn Kusama, Megan Fox plays a man-eater who thinks her friend Needy's boyfriend would make the perfect dinner. Amanda Seyfried and Johnny Simmons co-star.
Just in case you have never heard of Cody, she's the one who won an Oscar for the "Juno" screenplay. "Jennifer's Body" will take a different direction though, as you can read right here.

Like a phoenix, Lazarus, and our favorite 80’s boy band, it appears Ms. Cody’s MySpace account has risen from the grave. Eager to read her latest rapier attack on the over inflated blog culture, we clicked forward only to find an attack on us, her critics. That’s fair, we deserve what we get, but in response, we offer her, and of course you, our readers, this open letter, perfect for your morning reading. Feel free to print it out, and read it at the water-cooler or on your favorite john. Dear Diablo Cody, Like Calvin Baxter and Fran Kubelik, our relationship has been tumultuous. Our B- review “bashed” Juno before bashing was a trendy pastime, but when your premade cult classic hit DVD we re-reviewed the title.

I’ll never forget the thrill I felt reading Werner Herzog’s advice on how to become a film director, which boils down to skipping film school, taking up boxing, walking everywhere and working in a sex club. So where’s my Oscar, damn it? Yet when Juno was delivered to theaters around the country I remember feeling nothing but outrage over the stripper-turned-screenwriter Diablo Cody hype. I found the film incredibly tedious (though in retrospect I was probably a bit hard on Cody’s writing in my review – after reading excerpts from the script I think I had a much bigger problem with Reitman’s directing), but I had an even bigger problem with the condescension surrounding Cody herself: Look, a stripper who can put together more than three sentences! I often find myself in general sticking up for those who society deems “bimbos,” from muscle boys (most of

Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky and James Franco in Milk
Photo: Miramax and Focus Features The only thing James Franco needs to concern himself with right now is continuing his streak to remind folks he isn't just the stupid character Harry Osbourne from the overblown Spider-Man franchise, a franchise I am sure has put plenty of coin in his pocket, but did nothing for his career. Following Spider-Man 2 he starred in a trio of bad films. Annapolis was downright awful, Tristan and Isolde wasn't much better and Flyboys was equally dreadful. He had a few small films from then on until Spider-Man 3, which, once again did nothing for him. Even if he had done some great acting in any of the Spidey films it wouldn't have matter (by the way he was given some of the worst material ever as Harry Osborn) since the films were more about effects

I think I get to see Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist this week. Things are starting to pile up again here in moviedom, so I'm not entirely sure if I can get to it before next week or not, but I have found a couple new clips at Movie Web to tide me over.
You, of course, may have to wait longer than me to see the entire movie, so I suggest watching these clips at least every four hours until the pangs go away.
I'm a huge Michael Cera fan, and I think you can make the case that George Michael Bluth is the best character on Arrested Development. He sure was during season two, at the very least. And we know he's had great success in films already, with Superbad and Juno both earning well over $100 million.
Can Nick and Norah do that? I'm pessimistic. But if it's

Filed under: Box Office, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman
In the last few years, Nicole Kidman has starred in a number of movies that underperformed at the box office, but last year's disappointing grosses for The Interpreter, The Golden Compass and even Margot at the Wedding likely contributed to her being named the least bankable actor in Hollywood by Forbes magazine. Apparently, given her exorbitant asking price, Forbes estimates her movies only earn, on average, as much from ticket sales as she earns for appearing in them. This is a major drop compared to last year, when Kidman's films were estimated to gross $8 for every $1 she's paid.
After Kidman, Forbes names Jennifer Garner, whose '07 films The Kingdom and Catch and Release did poorly enough that the runaway success of Juno couldn't help her ranking. On average her films grossed $3.60 for every $1 she took home. In third place, not surprisingly, is Kidman's ex,

A British movie awards ceremony got a jump on all the others Tuesday night when the National Movie Awards, whose winners are decided by popular vote, gave top prizes to Mamma Mia! for best musical; The Dark Knight for best Superhero movie; Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for best action/adventure film; Juno for best comedy; and Wall-E for best family film. Awards were also given to Johnny Depp for best actor (Sweeney Todd) and Meryl Streep for best actress (Mamma Mia!) The glittery awards show, which aired on ITV1, drew dismal ratings, however, averaging just 2.8 million viewers.
