After recently watching the film, "Conversations with God", I thought this episode of The Simpson's might be lampooning Neale Walsch' series of books. Not necessarily connected at all, but Walsch spent time in Portland, which is ostensibly where The Simpson's is set, close to where Groening grew up, etc. Haven't read the books, but the trite lines from the movie are reminiscent of Brad Goodman. From the movie we have goodies like, "Anything you want, you can't have," and "What would love do?"

Wim Wenders film often used an actor named Rudiger Vogler, so every time I think of this Simpson's ep., and the phony name Bart used when Brad called him onto stage, I think of Wender's series of road movies.
