Dexter is his first name. His last name is Morgan, but it is an adopted last name. His biological last name is Moser.
Slice of Life
He and his brother witnessed their mother murdered with a chainsaw in a cargo container as children. They were found days later in a pool of blood that was 2 inches deep. He was taken in by Harry Morgan, who saw him for what he was, a psychopath. Harry taught him a code of ethics that helped him to satiate his bloodlust successfully and also help rid his little section of the world of other serial killers who could escape the justice system. His brother was taken in by the state and was never trained the way Dexter was.
This fruit is called "blood orange" and is found in Florida.
As of the end of Season 2, Dexter has killed 56 people, that the viewer is made aware of.In Season 2, episode 9, we learn that his trophy box contains 46 slides, one for each victim. This does not include Last Nurse, Dexter's first kill; Valerie Castillo, the coyote's wife, whose slide Dexter destroyed; his brother, Brian/Rudy, whom he killed in the final episode of Season 1 and for whom he did not collect a blood slide. Further, the blood-slide count does not include Ken Olsen, the copycat killer in Season 2, Episode 6, as Dexter was "in recovery"; Santos Jimenez, one of the drug dealers who killed Dexter's mother, as Dexter killed him after Doakes took the blood slide box from Dexter's apartment; the drug dealer whom Dexter kills in front of Doakes in Season 2, Episode 10; the pimp Dexter killed in a flashback in the same episode. In Season 2, Episode 11, Dexter kills two more drug dealers, bringing the total to 55. At the end of Season 2, Episode 12, Dexter kills Lila, for a current total of 56 people.
In Season 1, Episode 9, Dexter learns that his biological father Joe Driscoll has passed away. He takes a blood sample from him and has Masuka run a paternity test comparing it to his own. The paternity test proves that Joe Driscoll is Dexter's biological father. In Season 2, Episode 5 we learn that Dexter's adopted father Harry was engaged in an extramarital affair with Dexter's biological mother Laura Moser. However due to the paternity test in the first season, we know that there is no way Harry can be Dexter's biological father. It is possbile, although unlikely, that Brian was Harry's biological son.

The violence isn't anything worse than you'd see on CSI. They show very little and leave most of it to the imagination. They cut away (no pun intended) from the scene before something gruesome is about to happen. There is a considerable amount of blood, though.
They edited the profanity, the nudity (there's not much of it, anyway), and for the sake of fitting it into the time slot, a few conversations. They really didn't need to cut the violence, but they there are some scenes where they only flash on it, rather than have the camera linger.
Emotions associated with sex are harder for him to fake. Every time he sleeps with a woman, she sees something in him that freaks her out and she leaves him. Its safer for him to just avoid it.He finds it "messy" and "human". He does not see himself as "human" as he is so different and fakes all feelings/emotions to fit in and not be seen for what he is. His life is "clean", his apartment is clean (he was uncomfortable with Deborah's messiness when she stayed at his place), his crime scene is set up for as little mess as possible and he disposes of all debris to leave the area clean so as not to be detected.
Dexter has great music. Unfortunately, as of yet, there's no published song list for a lot of the music, especially the popular Cuban music. The soundtrack for Season 1 contains all the original music written for the show. You can hear sample tracks at Amazon.com, if you're trying to find a specific original song.
Only season 1 followed the main plotline of the first book. In season 2, the shows writers went their own direction.
You're in luck! Someone has. Television Without Pity has excellent detailed summaries that far outdo anything we could type here. You can click this link to get there. http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/Shows/Dexter
Is Harry really Dexter's biological father? No, he isn't. This was proven by a DNA test in Season 1, when he inherited the house from Joe Driscoll. Joe was really Dexter's biological father. Despite the fling with Laura Moser, Harry also knew that Joe was his father, because he went to Joe for the blood donation, when Dexter was in need of it. And no, they never explained why Joe didn't take the boys, but he seemed to have been living under an assumed identity.
