Knight Rider In Nascar Race Saturday Night

22 August 2008 5:54 AM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

In case you wonder where I am when I’m not pestering you here on Screen Rant, I keep myself busy blogging about Nascar. It’s always easy to figure out where I’ll be. If I’m not at the track, I’m glued in front of my TV watching auto racing, specifically, Nascar. then Sci-Fi, then action movies, then… well you get it.

I’ve been feebly trying to sneak a Nascar post in here from since, well, forever. I finally get to talk about it here on Screen Rant! Vic is letting me because I am sneaking it in under the umbrella of TV news. Ha Ha!

In my “bio”, he says he can’t figure out the common ground between my love for Sci-Fi, Comic Books and Nascar.

Well here it is:

Yates Racing and NBC announced a unique partnership with and between Ford Motor Company and NBC.

Are Studios Finally Learning Fanboys are a Waste of Time?

21 August 2008 12:52 AM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Hey V, thumbs up to anarchy!

Photo: David Frank/RopeofSilicon.com Can one article at The Hollywood Reporter alone spearhead a movement to put control back in the filmmaker's hands and leave the fanboy wet dream out of the process entirely? Just getting back from Comic Con last week took me four days to readjust to normal life. I was on geek overload even though I did my absolute very best to maintain my sanity. It began with 14-year-old girls yelling and screaming as the cast of Twilight was announced and it ended with a party with fellow online website owners hanging with the stars and drinking alcohol on a rooftop at the Hard Rock Hotel. It was certainly a whirlwind and it takes some serious getting used to. Previewed at Comic Con were titles such as Watchmen and Terminator Salvation. One isn't due in theaters until March of 2009 and the other until May.

Animation the evolving Art form

20 August 2008 4:23 AM, PDT | From ReelSuave.com | See recent Reel Suave news

Lot of us are totally lost in this totally evolving art form. The film industry has stopped taking this industry lightly anymore. There have been so many live action movies like Transformers, Speed Racer and Avatar( M Night Shymalan to direct the last one yikes) this will surely give the genre more leverage. But the medium took decades to gain critical mass among U.S audiences

It was first introduced in the 1960s with some really interesting family oriented shows like the Astro Boy and Speed Racer. Japanese anime enjoyed early...

Lethal Weapon 5?

7 August 2008 10:28 AM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

I think that it’s well known around these parts that I’m a big supporter of Mel Gibson (let’s not get into his views, the guy is a movie star), and that I love Richard Donner’s movies. I also love the work of Shane Black - that guy knew how to pen a witty action movie. If you don’t know, check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Last Boy Scout.

And now news has come in that Shane Black, writer of the original Lethal Weapon film, has apparently penned a fifth installment of the action series. Allegedly he has shown the script to producer Joel Silver (Speed Racer) and both Danny Glover and Mad Mel are interested in returning to their signature roles!

This is great news - but is it really going to happen?

Goodman Returns To Film After Settling Lawsuit

4 August 2008 11:57 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actor John Goodman has rejoined the cast of forthcoming movie Pope Joan, after settling a $3 million (GBP1.5 million) legal dispute with the film's production company.

Goodman was set to star in next year's release - about a legendary female pope in the middle ages - but pulled out to take a role in action movie Speed Racer.

The resignation prompted bosses of Swiss-based company Constantin Film to sue him for breach of contract.

Both parties have now agreed to leave the terms of the agreement undisclosed, although Constantin executives have confirmed the case has been settled - and Goodman is back onboard.

Hirsch Prompts Gay Rumour

3 August 2008 6:16 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

A crew member on Emile Hirsch's movie Speed Racer is convinced the actor is gay, after walking in on an awkward moment between him and co-star Kick Gurry

The pair was taking a break between scenes in a trailer onset in Berlin, Germany, when an assistant burst in, while the Into the Wild actor was half naked and out of breath.

Hirsch explains, "Me and Kick were in the trailer hanging out. Kick was sitting back with his hands behind his head and I was doing push ups. It was hot so I peeled my driver's suit down a bit, and then Eric, the wonderfully gay production assistant, walked in. I jumped up really quick, but I was out of breath.

"Eric slammed the door shut. We went to Eric later and tried to explain. He was like, 'Shhhhh. I will never tell.'"

But Hirsch discovered a positive side to the confusion, when Eric leaped to his defence during a later confrontation. He adds, "I then got in this feud with a German woman and Eric defended me. He told her, "You do not understand what this boy goes through every day.'"

Hirsch has been linked with Mamma Mia! star Amanda Seyfried, and Gurry dated Christina Ricci.

The Wachowskis & Keanu Are Plastic, Man

16 July 2008 10:16 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Story from Latino Review claims that a source of source from somewhere in Berlin is reporting that the Wachowski Bros. are looking to reunite with their Matrix Trilogy leading man, Keanu Reeves, in order to bring a certain fantastic elastic DC superhero to the big screen.

That’s right folks, Plastic Man. Who is Plastic Man? Why he’s a superhero whose superpower is having a silly-puddy body! (Think Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four.) Thankfully, Plastic Man is much zanier and wild than Reed Richards, (think Jim Carrey in The Mask.) The various applications of Plastic Man’s powers in the comic books has ranged from comedic, to insane, to downright obscene. Could be a fun movie, done correctly.

But wait? Keanu “stone face” Reeves playing the most pliable super-hero of all time? Ha. The Universe Does have a sense of irony.

Can Speed Racer Get Up To Speed On DVD?

16 July 2008 10:29 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Warner Bros.' Speed Racer may have achieved distinction as the most spectacular flop of the summer in its theatrical release, but the studio's marketing department nevertheless intends to give the DVD and Blu-ray release of the movie a big push. The studio said on Tuesday that it plans to issue a deluxe three-disc set on September 16 that will include a Blu-ray disc, a second disc featuring the videogame "Speed Racer Crucible Challenge" and a video demonstrating how the car races in the movie were created without the use of a single real car (other "extras" to be announced later), and a third featuring a "Digital Copy" of the film for downloading onto portable video players.

Warner didn't send me a review copy of this film so I can't tell you how the transfer looks, how it sounds or what the special features are like, but knowing them it's going to be impressive. First Max Payne Trailer

11 July 2008 9:21 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

I’m not a video game guy (believe it or not) so when a movie is being produced based on a game I come to the table “clean,” with no preconceived notions. Well… other than assuming that the movie will be awful, as seems to be the case pretty much without exception when it comes to movies based on video games.

So to me, this trailer for the upcoming movie Max Payne, looks pretty cool. Now as I pointed out in my Wanted review, it takes more than “cool” to make a decent movie. Generally Wahlberg brings a lot of intensity to a role, so this one may be custom made for him. Let’s just hope this film isn’t all look and no substance.

Here’s the plot synopsis:

'Dark Knight' Adds Opening Day Screenings at 6am

10 July 2008 12:59 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

You know it's a good sign for your opening weekend when...

The New York Times is reporting that The Dark Knight, which like a lot of blockbusters will have midnight screenings on July 18th, will have additional early screenings at not just 3am but also 6am because of the overwhelming demand.

It's not just in major metropolitan areas, either; The Times says towns like Eagan, Minnesota will also have 6am Dark Knight showings to accommodate the hordes of people anxious to see the most talked about movie of the year. “In the public mind, opening weekends have been eventized,” said Dark Knight executive producer Thomas Tull. And that's of course, very true.

For several reasons, the opening weekend is vitally important to both the film and the studio(s) it represents. To begin with, an opening weekend generally accounts for 30% or more of a blockbuster's overall domestic take. Look at

John Carter Of Mars Update

23 June 2008 11:23 AM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

I hope that you are not holding your breath for the upcoming adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars. The reason - well they won’t even know if the film will be live action, animated or a mixture of both techniques for another year!

Andrew Stanton, the writer-director of the upcoming Wall-e says:

“Everybody’s asking that, and we are not going to make that decision for about a year.”

Man, how long has this thing been in development?

Robert Rodriguez, John Favreau and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow’s Kerry Conran have all been attached to direct the film that would follow the adventures of John Carter, a Civil War hero who becomes transported to Mars.

Gee, I always wondered why they called it John Carter of Mars!

Will this film ever be made?

It’ll probably see the light of day at some point,

Box Office - Would You Believe $40 Million for 'Get Smart'?

22 June 2008 10:56 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

It turns out Get Smart could hold on to its audience over the course of a weekend, besting our projections and winding up just short of $40 million in its debut, according to Box Office Mojo. You would have to consider this evidence that Steve Carell is now one of the comedians audiences will pay to see.

Even though Evan Almighty didn't make its ridiculous $200 million budget back last summer, it was a $100 million comedy by the end of the bean counting, and Dan in Real Life, even though it was a much smaller film, made about $50 million on a $25 million budget.

And it's curious to note that this is the weekend that cements him as a "movie star," because it's also the same weekend audiences completely gave up on Mike Myers.

His Love Guru was an absolute mess before anyone paid to see it, and now it's a bomb. Its

Ladies' Day Returns To Theaters

3 June 2008 10:38 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Even the box office estimates for the opening weekend of Warner Bros.' Sex and the City turned out to be too conservative as the film earned a million and a half dollars more on Sunday than studio executives had reckoned. The film took in a total of $56.9 million for the weekend, substantially ahead of Paramount's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which brought in $44.8 million in its second week, pushing its gross past the $200-million mark to $215.6 million. The No. 3 film, Universal's horror flick The Strangers, also performed better than expected with $21 million -- more than what the film cost to produce. In fourth place, Iron Man appeared to have legs of steel, as it brought in another $13.5 million after five weeks. Rounding out the top five, Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian added $12.7 million to its gross in its third week. The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Sex and the City: The Movie, Warner Bros, $56,848,056, (New); 2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Paramount, $44,754,615, 2 Wks. ($215,635,899); 3. Basketball Star Sues Over Speed Racer Deal

U.S. basketball star Samuel Dalembert is suing a design studio he claims conned him out of more than $1 million (GBP500,000) he thought he was investing into comic book movie Speed Racer.

The Philadelphia 76ers player claims he handed the money over to a design studio in New York in 2006, in the belief it was using his investment to license Speed Racer products and merchandise.

According to TMZ.com, Dalembert has filed a lawsuit, seeking more than $50,000 (GBP25,000) from Art Asylum, claiming they never had the rights to Speed Racer in the first place.

Sex More In Vogue Than Crystal Skull

2 June 2008 10:32 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

When Friday's box-office results for Sex and the City came in on Saturday, Hollywood gurus were stunned. The movie had earned just about as much as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had earned the previous Friday, just under $30 million. While advance word was that the movie would do especially well on Friday as groups of women got together for the premiere, no one had predicted that it would do that well. But Warner Bros. distribution chief Dan Fellman told the Associated Press, "There were women that came in and bought out entire theaters in advance and invited all their friends." Co-star Sarah Jessica Parker told the New York Times, "It is kind of mind-boggling." (Eighty-five percent of the audience Friday night was female.) And in fact the movie took in only half its Friday gross on Saturday and again on Sunday, winding up with $55.7 million -- just about what it reportedly cost to produce. And yes, it became the top moneymaker at the box office for the weekend, pushing Indy into second place with $46 million -- also something that no one had predicted. Also opening solidly was the horror flick The Strangers, with about $20.7 million, to place third. Some experts are predicting that Crystal Skull will return to the top spot next week and remain there for a while, pointing out that the potential audience for that film is far greater than that for Sex and the City -- especially as kids begin pouring out of school for summer vacation.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers: 1. Sex and the City, $55.7 million; 2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, $46 million; 3. The Strangers, $20.7 million; 4. Iron Man, $14 million; 5. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, $13 million; 6. What Happens in Vegas, $6.9 million; 7. Baby Mama, $2.2 million; 8. Speed Racer, $2.1 million; 9. Made of Honor, $2 million; 10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall, $1 million.

Indy Magnetizes $311.1 Million

27 May 2008 10:29 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

When the final tally of Memorial Day weekend ticket sales is calculated, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is expected to wind up with $311.1 million worldwide, with about $151.1 million of that amount coming from the U.S. and Canada, according to Paramount Pictures, its distributor. The movie reportedly got a boost from 30- and 40-year-old moviegoers, a demographic group that is more selective about the films it takes in in than the primary teens and 20-year-olds who make up the primary movie-going audience. "That [older] audience was excited to see the movie and excited to bring their kids with them," Paramount distribution chief Rob Moore told Reuters. The expected $151.1-million Memorial Day gross in the U.S. was surpassed only by the $153 million that Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End took in over the same holiday weekend last year. The top ten films for the four-day (Friday through Monday) holiday weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers (Thursday results are not included):1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Paramount, $126,040,000; 2. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Disney, $28,642,000; 3. Iron Man, Paramount, $25,650,000; 4. What Happens in Vegas, $Fox, $11,150,000; 5. Speed Racer, Warner Bros., $5,205,000; 6. Baby Mama, Universal, $4,208,100; 7. Made of Honor, Sony/Col/Rev, $4,200,000; 8. Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Universal, $2,19,9120; 9. Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantánamo Bay, Warner Bros., $1,200,000; 10. The Visitor, Overture Films, $91,7000.

Indie Likely To Go Down As Holiday #2

26 May 2008 10:22 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull earned an estimated $101 million between Friday and Sunday and might well outdo the current Memorial Day holiday champ, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, for the five-day record. Pirates earned $153 million during that period last year. Currently Crystal Skull is expected to come in at about $151 million. Final figures are due to be released on Wednesday. The film is expected to earn nearly the same amount internationally, due primarily to the greater strength of foreign currency. Nevertheless, it will take more than a single Indiana Jones success to lift the box office to its year-ago level. Currently, total ticket sales for 2008 are down almost 4 percent from 2007 and admissions are down 6.7 percent, according to box-office trackers Media by Numbers. In an interview with the London Financial Times, Dergarabedian said, "Indiana Jones is a shot in the arm but we're going to need consistency in the entire marketplace to catch up to last year." The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, $101 million; 2. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, $23 million; 3. Iron Man, $20.1 million; 4. What Happens in Vegas, $9 million; 5. Speed Racer, $4 million; 6. Made of Honor, $3.4 million; 7.
