Nicholas Cage gears up to ‘Kick-Ass’

22 August 2008 7:15 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Nicholas Cage is the latest to join the cast of “Kick-Ass,” Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming adaptation of Mark Millar’s violent comic book, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Aaron Johnson and Lyndsy Fonseca also boarded the project.

The story centers on a boring high school student (Johnson) who attempts to become a real-life superhero named Kick-Ass but runs into several troubles because of his poor physique. Cage stars as an ex-cop who struggles to bring down a local druglord.

Also on board is “Superbad” star Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who plays the aggressive son of a mobster who tries to uncover Kick-Ass’ identity.

Most of the major studios refused to develop the project because of the comic’s excessive violence, which is why Vaughn raised the budget for the flick himself.

Vaughn previously directed “Layer Cake” and “Stardust.” Cage most recently starred in “National Treasure: Book of Secrets.” He will next be

The Big Picture Interview with Emma Stone

21 August 2008 3:31 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

She grew up just down the road from The Big Picture here in Phoenix, and now Emma Stone has two movies in theaters this weekend, with The House Bunny and The Rocker with Rainn Wilson. She's just 19, but Stone has already carved out a little niche for herself with her new flicks and her turn last summer in Superbad. Stone recently returned home for a couple of days, where we had a chance to catch up with her and talk shop.

Is Amelia in The Rocker a lot like Emma?

No, and that's what I liked about it. She felt different than me. She's not a smiler and she looks at the dark side of things more often than the light side of things. I'm a little more silver lining in my life. That's what drew me to her, especially in a comedy, finding a character like that that is

'Kick-Ass' is in the Database, but What is It?

20 August 2008 7:36 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

For a month or so now all the fanboy blogs have been ranting and raving about something called Kick-Ass, a film based on a comic by Mark Millar, and I had no idea what it was since I don't read comics, but now that I have learned a few of the particulars it sounds relatively interesting. The comic is described as an ultraviolent story following Dave Lizewski, a high school dweeb who attempts to reinvent himself as a real-world costumed superhero named Kick-Ass who seems doomed to failure because he's not athletic or coordinated until he runs into real bad guys with real weapons. Apparently the damn thing is so violent no studio will touch it, but that isn't stopping Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake and Stardust) from finding his own source of money and getting it made. The first casting has just been announced and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin' from Superbad) and Chloe Moretz,

Pegg Denies Inglorious Bastards Role and Talks Paul

18 August 2008 12:37 PM, PDT | From toxicshock.tv | See recent toxicshock news

Simon Pegg announced on his MySpace page that Director Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) will direct Nick Frost and Pegg’s new movie, Paul. This will be the first film the two will star in that isn’t directed by friend and director Edgar Wright. Written by Pegg and Frost, Paul is about two British comic book geeks that get into an adventure across America. “Friends” Actor David Schwimmer was originally set to direct the flick. In addition to this news, Pegg says that he won’t be able to star in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film Inglorious Bastards as was previously reported. “Much to our mutual disappointment, I won’t be appearing in Qt’s forthcoming ‘Inglorious Bastards’ due to insurmountable scheduling difficulties,” he said. “We really tried [...]

17 August 2008 1:04 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Summer is now drawing to a close, the last of the big blockbusters of the season have been released and we are slowly moving into awards territory again.

Don’t worry - there are plenty of films to keep us entertained.

In this Weekend Movie News Wrap Up we look at why Simon Pegg isn’t an Inglorious Bastard, we see the return of CandymanConan gets rewritten, we check out the details of the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull DVD and we have a look at some more images from Watchmen.

1. Simon Pegg was almost in Inglorious Bastards. Almost. The Shaun of the Dead star was close to signing on to the WWII film, but he had to retreat because of scheduling conflicts.

Pegg had this to say on his Myspace page:

"Superbad" Director Teams with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost for "Paul"

16 August 2008 11:30 PM, PDT | From JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news

It has been a while since we've heard anything about Paul. Almost a year since the announcement (index.php?option=com_content view=article id=2006:simon-pegg-and-nick-frost-do-america catid=41:news Itemid=65), in fact. I guess the project had to be put on the back burner when J.J. Abrams snagged Pegg for his Star Trek; but now we finally have a director for the project. Simon Pegg revealed (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view friendID=213643855 blogID=424692147) on his MySpace page that Superbad director Greg Mottola will be helming the pic. Apparently Mottola was snared up by the duo months ago, but the deal was kept under wraps. Until now.

Simon Pegg leaves ‘Bastards,’ joins ‘Paul’

16 August 2008 9:11 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Yes, you read right. British actor Simon Pegg left Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming WWII drama “Inglorious Bastards” because of scheduling conflicts, according to Empire Online.

Okay, it may not hurt the project that much, but I was definitely looking forward to Pegg kicking butt as a British lieutenant.

On the other hand, however, “Superbad” director Greg Mottola is set to direct “Paul,” a road trip comedy written by Pegg and his buddy Nick Frost, whose acting credits include “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz.”

Not much is known about that project at this stage, but the plot centers on two buddies taking a road trip across America.

That’s good news. I strongly believe in Mottola’s ability to direct other hilarious comedies, and with Pegg and Frost supplying him with a script, what could possibly go wrong?

Simon Pegg today revealed that he will no longer be appearing in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards. "I won't be appearing in Qt's forthcoming Inglorious Bastards due to insurmountable scheduling difficulties. Greg Mottola Directing Nick Frost and Simon Pegg's Next Film

16 August 2008 3:23 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Two big news items surrounding cult actor Simon Pegg have both hit today. First, Pegg is no longer going to be in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards as originally reported. "I won't be appearing in Qt's forthcoming Inglorious Bastards due to insurmountable scheduling difficulties. We really tried to make it work but in the end, it just was not possible without severe ramifications elsewhere." Quite sad because I was looking forward to his appearance, but that's how it goes with busy actors like Simon. The good news, however, is that Pegg's next film, titled just Paul, has found a director. Greg Mottola of Superbad and the upcoming Adventureland has signed on to direct that film which was written by Pegg and Nick Frost. We actually first mentioned Paul back in May. The film is a road movie set in America about two British comic book geeks that get into an

Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who will forever be known as McLovin from Superbad, is in negotiations to join Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, an adaptation of the comic by Mark Millar. McLovin Will Kick-Ass in Matthew Vaughn's Violent Adaptation!

14 August 2008 11:07 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

We've been waiting for this news to hit ever since we first announced that Mark Millar's violent comic book Kick-Ass was being adapted by Stardust director Matthew Vaughn. Before we get down to the names, you need to be familiar with the story first. Kick-Ass is about a "high school dweeb" who attempts to reinvent himself as a real-world costumed superhero named Kick-Ass but eventually gets his ass kicked! Christopher Mintz-Plasse, aka McLovin from Superbad, will play a character known as Red Mist - not the main character in the film. Also starring alongside of Mintz-Plasse is Chloe Moretz, who will play a "ferocious, potty-mouthed 11-year-old who chops down crime thugs with a ninja sword." If you're expecting this to be violent, you're right. In fact it was so violent, that all the major Hollywood studios passed on the project and Vaughn was forced to come up with $30 million

Rogen Plans Superbad/Pineapple Express Crossover

13 August 2008 6:26 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Seth Rogen is planning to bring back movie hits Superbad and Pineapple Express with one cross-over sequel.

Rogen and Evan Goldberg creation Superbad was a box office hit in 2007, grossing $162 million (GBP81 million) off a relatively small $20 million (GBP10 million) budget.

Stoner comedy Pineapple Express is heading for similar heights, having already taken double its $25 million (GBP12.5 million) budget in just a week at the global box office.

And Rogen's co-star in the movie, James Franco, reveals studio bosses are leaning on the 26 year old to write follow ups for both.

Franco tells MTV, "Even before Superbad came out, I think the studio was trying to get (Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg) to write a sequel, but they really didn't want to write a sequel. And so, an answer to that was to do a Superbad/Pineapple Express crossover, an unprecedented crossover movie with two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie and somehow these characters get together, which doesn't make sense at all, but could work."

Watch the new 'Role Models' trailer

9 August 2008 8:44 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

David Wain, director of last year's "The Ten," returns to the big screen with "Role Models," a comedy starring Seann William Scott, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks and "Superbad" star Christopher Mintz-Plasse. In the film, two energy drink reps (Scott and Rudd) decide to enroll into a Big Brother program after getting into a whole load of trouble.

The first trailer was released just a few days ago, and while I'm not exactly impressed by what I saw, I have to admit the flick does not look that horrible either. Most of this just looks like standard silly comedy, with Scott putting on his usual routine. But who knows; maybe you'll find the trailer more hilarious than I did. You can check it out just above. Enjoy.
