The Best Actress race is heating up with glowing reviews for Sally Hawkins in Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky, which creates a heads up battle between Hawkins and Anne Hathaway as people begin weighing in on the category. If you look at the Envelope's picks, all but Kris Tapley at In Contention believe Hathaway will be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for Rachel Getting Married while only three believe Sally Hawkins will get the gold. Strangely enough, Tom O'Neil, who runs the Envelope but didn't participate in the latest prediction, wrote a recent article headlined "'Happy-Go-Lucky' may have Sally Hawkins smiling at Oscar time". O'Neil points out past Best Actress nominees from Mike Leigh flicks: Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake, 2004) and Brenda Blethyn (Secrets and Lies, 1996). O'Neil was alone a few weeks ago in suggesting Hawkins for an Oscar and that survey also shows a growing appreciation for Hathaway.

Alert! It’s only a big rumor at this point, but Hollywood Elsewhere says Josh Brolin may star in the big-screen version of John Albano and Tony DeZuniga’s graphic novel “Jonah Hex.”
Apparently, Brolin’s rep said the actor is not attached to the project, which is set up at Warner Bros. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the creators of the “Crank” flicks, are set to direct.
So, who is Jonah Hex and what is the film about? Hex is a bounty hunter and gunslinger with a scarred face who, according to Hollywood Elsewhere’s source, tracks down a voodoo practitioner.
Apparently, the film version is a sort of sci-fi western featuring plenty of CG. That’s all we know (or think we know) at this stage.
Brolin most recently starred in “American Gangster.” He will next be seen as George W. Bush in Oliver Stone’s “W.” He

Greetings, Moguls! After the dead period of August and September, now we're finally into October leagues. Instead of movies just being dumped because they have to get released Sometime (I'm looking at you, Bangkok Dangerous), now there are winter blockbusters and Oscar bait on the docket. It's a refreshing change, if you ask me. With that in mind, I've taken my monthly weekend-by-weekend look through October's offerings, selecting a stud, dud and wild card for each. No, the badassery of James Bond and the potential PTA power of Gus Van Sant (Milk) or Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon) aren't quite here yet, but at least you can already put them on your slate! Although this is sometimes the case, "stud" doesn't necessarily mean best value. After all, it's the film that's guaranteed to perform well — and that guarantee might mean a pretty high price tag.

Sean Penn texted ex-wife Madonna as soon as he finished kissing James Franco for his new film. According to Franco, Penn felt that the popstar would appreciate knowing that he was thinking of her as the pair locked lips in 'Milk'. Can anyone catch up to this cool cat? With Shia Labeouf's Eagle Eye taking the top spot at the box-office this weekend it makes four-in-a-row for the actor (not counting the animated Surf's Up) and it made me wonder if the 22-year-old is our next big time actor or if it's just a case of him starring in the right film at the right time that has made his films so popular leaving the title of "The Next Big Thing" up for grabs. Let's face it, Transformers and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were going to make big bucks no matter what, Shia had very little, if anything, to do with their success. One could make the argument that Disturbia opened during a very weak time in 2007 and that accounts for its three week box-office domination with rather modest numbers, winning that third weekend with barely over $9 million.

Sean Penn was so excited he had experienced his first same-sex kiss with Milk co-star James Franco - he immediately texted gay icon Madonna to boast.
Penn stars alongside Franco in the forthcoming biopic of San Francisco's first gay Mayor Harvey Milk, in which the pair play lovers.
And after wrapping their first gay smooch scene, Penn wanted to tell his ex-wife Madonna about his risque antics.
Franco tells Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper, "After our kiss, Sean texted Madonna and said, 'I just popped my cherry kissing a guy. I thought of you. I don't know why'."

Actor James Franco, actress Sally Hawkins, director John Patrick Shanley and writer Dustin Lance Black will receive Breakthrough awards at the 12th annual Hollywood Film Festival. The awards will be handed out October 27 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Both Franco and Hawkins appear in top Oscar-contending films, with Franco as Sean Penn's lover in Gus Van Sant's "Milk" and Hawkins as an unflaggingly chirpy British schoolmarm in Mike Leigh's "Happy-Go-Lucky."
Shanley directs the upcoming "Doubt" and Black penned the script for "Milk." Other winners will include "Wall-E" director Andrew Stanton, who draws the Hollywood Animation award. "Iron Man" will receive the visual effects nod for f/x supervisors John Nelson and Ben Snow.
Celebrity News Service remembers Breakthrough winner Franco from his days on the television series "Freaks and Geeks." He also won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of James Dean in the made for TV bio "James Dean.

Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky and James Franco in Milk
Photo: Miramax and Focus Features The only thing James Franco needs to concern himself with right now is continuing his streak to remind folks he isn't just the stupid character Harry Osbourne from the overblown Spider-Man franchise, a franchise I am sure has put plenty of coin in his pocket, but did nothing for his career. Following Spider-Man 2 he starred in a trio of bad films. Annapolis was downright awful, Tristan and Isolde wasn't much better and Flyboys was equally dreadful. He had a few small films from then on until Spider-Man 3, which, once again did nothing for him. Even if he had done some great acting in any of the Spidey films it wouldn't have matter (by the way he was given some of the worst material ever as Harry Osborn) since the films were more about effects

Gus Van Sant's biopic about Harvey Milk - starring Sean Penn - soon drops upon us. Harvey Milk was San Fran's first openly gay elected official. Voted onto the Board of Supervisors, he served 11 months. His story ends with his murder in 1978. But his story begins in New York.
In the '20s, Will Rogers, headlining in "The Ziegfeld Follies," bought a home in Kew Gardens, Queens. That house was later owned by a family named Salem. Harvey lived with the Salems. His cousin and he were very close.

James Franco is more than just the villain or supporting actor that some might think he is. While he played second lead to Tobey Maguire in the Spiderman franchise, a number of upcoming projects may put Franco in a much brighter light. Aside from Milk (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1013753/), where he's part of the terrific ensemble cast, he's also in another high-profile film called Howl (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1049402/). - - - - - - Oh, why My Own Private James Franco? It's actually just a reference to his interview by the New York Times (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5Pupmdeang), where he mentioned the Gus Van Sant film as the reason why he decided to become an actor... Director Gus Van Sant will be honoured at New York's forthcoming Gotham Awards.
Tribute will be paid to Van Sant, along with Penelope Cruz, at the December event, where the filmmaker's new movie Milk will be premiered.
Milk stars Sean Penn as pioneering gay politician Harvey Milk.
Michelle Byrd, executive director of the IFP, tells Daily Variety, "Gus is that rare director who has achieved a steady balance between his independent roots and mainstream filmmaking."
The IFP is also launching an initiative to encourage gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual filmmakers, by donating video cameras and scheduling training and mentoring sessions at New York's Harvey Milk High School - opened in tribute to Milk.

I can already see the review headlines taking advantage of the "Got Milk" slogan when it comes to reviewing the upcoming Gus Van Sant feature Milk based on Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America. Thankfully the poster for the film doesn't do that route. I have added the poster below and you can check out a larger version of the poster as well as three stills from the film, which hits theaters on November 26, right here. Photo: Focus Features

Trolling Trailer Addict this afternoon, I spied a new poster for Milk, the upcoming bio-pic of the late San Francisco politician Harvey Milk.
Milk was the first admitted homosexual elected to a significant political post in the U.S., and he was later gunned down by a rival named Dan White. Sean Penn will play Milk in Gus Van Sant's film, with Josh Brolin in the role of White. How Dan White received a voluntary manslaughter conviction for this crime (actually a double murder, since he also killed San Francisco mayor George Moscone) is beyond me.
Milk was far from perfect, though; he was a big Jim Jones supporter, as were many of his political associates. I wonder if the world's largest mass suicide will be mentioned in the movie. It should be.
Here's the poster for the film, which isn't quite as compelling as the trailer.
Milk opens on December 5th.

This week, the eyes have it. We're looking at films for which vision is key.
Nicolas Cage has the only new film going into wide release this week with Bangkok Dangerous, but frankly this tale of prophetic doom better grabs my attention. Cage plays a school teacher who digs up a time capsule and finds several pages of hand written numbers. He finds dates within those numbers, each of which corresponds to a major disaster that has occurred since the capsule was buried. More importantly the numbers apparently list disasters which have yet to occur. I'd be a little more enthusiastic if Cage's record hadn't been so hit and miss lately. (Ghost Rider? Puh-leeze.) Still the premise sounds kind of cool, despite reminding me of the lackluster The Number 23, and there's a disaster in the trailer that's pretty chilling, especially if you've ever been to Logan Airport in Boston.

Something I hadn't even thought of for a second sort of shocked me when reading Tom O'Neill's post announcing the trailer for Milk, the film starring Sean Penn as he plays Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America. In his opening 'graph he asks: Ah, was it only three years ago that those queasy older dudes in the motion picture academy revealed they couldn't take a shot of the strong gay stuff? Now "Milk" may go down easier? As I watched the trailer I knew the crux of the story were Milk's accomplishments as a gay man, but I never even considered the fact that may actually affect its Oscar chances. Actually, I never even thought about it outside of it being a part of the storyline. In 2006 Crash somehow managed to steal the Best Picture Oscar in a weak

Focus Features have just released the first trailer of "Milk". Reeling in the first glimpses into their based-on-true-story feature film, the trailer is made in line of its tagline, "His life changed history, his courage changed lives". By that it means that the footage focuses on some of the main conflicts of the film, especially the social climate in late '70s.
Providing viewers also with Harvey Milk's conflict with city supervisor Dan White and the threats to his life, the trailer let out the performances of Sean Penn as Milk, Josh Brolin as White, Emile Hirsch as Cleve Jones, James Franco as Scott Smith and Diego Luna as Jack Lira.
From the Academy Award-nominated director Gus Van Sant comes the film about the later life and assassination of San Francisco city supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk. One of two films about Milk, the flick is written by

Until today the only talk about Oscar Best Picture resided around Wall-e and The Dark Knight, two films that have basically already been written off for the category and perhaps I now know why. Check out the trailer for Gus van Sant's Milk starring Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna and James Franco and get prepared for what looks like a fantastic film.

Gus Van Sant is an artist. With his last few films, among them Paranoid Park and Last Days, he has made sure that we don't forget it. The master of dreamlike landscapes and lyrical, mood-driven atmosphere, it's sometimes easy to forget that this is also the man who directed straight up dramas like Good Will Hunting and Finding Forrester. Well it looks like good ol' Gus has decided to pay the world of conventional narratives another visit, albeit on the seat of a very controversial subject....
