Welcome back, Pete Ross

Memorable Smallville character Pete 'The Boss' Ross is back for an episode that has a silly premise but a story that improves on the premise.

Pete Ross (Sam Jones III) is back in Smallville while on the tour with One Republic. While at the concert, a kryptonite piece of Stride gum causes him to develop a power, which allows him to save Kara. This power causes him to want to share it with the public and use it to help people, rather than living in the shadows like Clark usually lives. Back in town, Pete learns that many things have changed, including Clark's relationship with Lionel and the fact that others know about Clark's secret. However, Lex uses his power as CEO of the Daily Planet to monitor Chloe's computer and turns Pete's compassion for Chloe against him to retrieve an important piece of jewelry related to Kara, who gets closer to Lex in her jaded trust of him.

Looking past the premise, this episode does just enough, due to including undercurrents of the major threads to this season's story, to break it away from most "fillers" that are the 13th episodes of Smallville seasons. A lot of this can be attributed to the return of Pete Ross, a favorite character among fans of the show.
